Gerry came to Bemidji State from Lincoln, Nebraska, and earned a degree in physical education. He was a wrestler and earned two letters. He returned to Nebraska after graduating and coached wrestling and golf at Kimball. Since 1966 he has coached wrestling at Canby, Minnesota, and has compiled a record of 235-46-8. His teams have been the conference champions for 17 of those 20 years, district champions for 18 years and regional champions for 14 years. He has coached 61 individual state entrants and 8 individual state champions for three years and team consolation champions at the state tournament two years. Gerry has been named coach of the year at the state level three times, the region coach of the year twice and was the conference coach of the year in 1985. His teaching colleagues named teacher of the year in 1975. He is a member of many civic organizations and professional associations. Gerry is beginning his 21st year of teaching and coaching at Canby.
