A four-time letter winner for the men’s swimming team, Boss earned All-NIC accolades as well as NAIA and American College Coaches Association All-America honors in each of his four seasons for the Beavers. He captured the 1981 NAIA title for the 200 individual medley. Boss was also a member of three consecutive NIC championship teams and participated in the national meet to conclude each of his four collegiate seasons, which included a pair of fourth-place finishes. He left Bemidji State as the owner of four individual records: 200 individual medley (1:57.5), 400 individual medley (4:12.2), 100 backstroke (54.6) and 200 backstroke (2:00.5) in addition to BSU pool records in the 200 individual medley (2:00.6) and 200 butterfly (1:59.7). Boss and his teammates on the 1978-79 men's swimming team were inducted into the BSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
