Jim Lawrence graduated from Bemidji State University with a bachelor's
degree in physical education and a minor in social studies. After
starting at BSU as a freshman, Jim's education was put on hold while he
served there years in the army during the Korean War. Upon returning to
BSU, Jim resumed his role as a student athlete and was a standout in
three sports, including football, basketball and baseball. As a four
year letter winner in football, Jim served as team co-captain his
junior year and was named All Conference his senior year. Jim was also
a four year letter winner in basketball and made All Conference both
his junior and senior years. He was elected team captain his sophomore,
junior and senior years in this sport. Jim's third sport was baseball,
which he played for three years. After finishing school, Jim continued
playing on a competitive basketball team and in 1962 and 1963, he
participated in an all Indian tournament in Chicago earning honors as
conference MVP both years. Jim's professional career began in
education, and spanned seven years, including teaching and coaching
stints at Red Lake and Deer River. From there, Jim moved into education
administration, first with the Red Lake Tribe and then for the Bureau
of Indian Affairs in Arizona. After 17 years in education, Jim made a
career change, moving into the world of health care and hospital
administration. This change returned him to Red Lake for a few years
and then back to Arizona to work with on the Hopi reservation. Jim is
now retired and lives in Phoenix, Arizona. He has three grown children.
