Mike Gibbons has earned three degrees from Bemidji State University,
starting with a BS in Business Administration in 1982, a BS in Physical
Education in 1987 and a Masters in Physical Education in 1989.
While attending BSU for his first degree, Mike was a four-year letter winner in men's hockey.
The
Beavers were conference champions his first three years, and Mike was
one of the captains of the 1978-79 National Championship team.
Mike
earned many honors during his years on the team, including
All-Conference in 1976-77 and 1977-78, All-Tournament in 1976-77,
1978-79 and All-American in 1977-78 and in 1978-79.
Upon graduation, Mike held the records for the most all-time career points as a defenseman and the most penalty minutes.
Mike
currently ranks seventh in all-time career points as a defenseman. In
1981-82, he was an assistant coach for the BSU hockey team, and was
named head coach the following season.
In his one
season as head coach, the team had their first 30 win season in BSU
history, the Beavers won the national championship and Mike was named
NCHA Conference Coach of the Year, and won the Edward Jeremiah Award
for NCAA Division II Coach of the Year.
When Mike left Bemidji State, his coaching experience was just beginning.
He
was an assistant coach at Northern Michigan University for four
seasons, Colorado College for one season, and the University of Denver
for three seasons.
In 1995 he became head coach of
the Langley Thunder of the BCJHL before taking an assistant coaching
job with the Baltimore Bandits of the AHL in 1996-97. That same season
he was also the camp coach for the NHL Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
Mike
coached the Select 17 Teams USA Hockey for six years. He was also named
as an assistant coach for the USA World Junior team in 2006, finishing
fourth in the World Junior tournament.
Mike is
currently teaching at Eastview High School in Apple Valley, MN where he
is also the head coach of the boy's hockey team, earning Section 5
Coach of the Year honors on three different occasions and taking his
team to the State Hockey Tournament in 2001.
In addition to his high school coaching responsibilities, Mike has volunteered as a youth hockey coach for the past nine years.
Mike
has also served as a Meals on Wheels volunteer, served holiday meals to
the homeless and was a Mary Mother of the Church volunteer.
