After two years of roaming the Bemidji State University Soccer Complex sidelines as BSU’s graduate assistant coach, Andrew Janssen took on a new title in 2012 when he was officially appointed as the program’s first full-time assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

Janssen has now completed his fifth season in his current role. He is responsible for the coordination of forward and midfield attacking patterns, planning and implementing practice sessions, goalkeeper training, scouting reports and assists in making travel arrangements. Beginning with the 2013 freshman class, Janssen took on the role of recruiting coordinator and was integral in landing players like Sarah Stram, who broke onto the collegiate scene in 2013 and led the Beavers with seven goals and 17 points as a freshman and finished the 2014 campaign garnering all-region accolades from the NSCAA and Daktonics after posting a team-best 12 goals and rank third in the NSIC. In addition, multiple players each year, including a record seven in 2016, have been named to the All-NSIC team. Three of those players, Christine Szurek, Stram, and Raquel Thelen, were also given All-Central Region honors by the NSCAA for their efforts in leading the Beavers to their eighth consecutive appearance in the NSIC tournament.

Since Jannsen joined the staff in 2010, the Beavers have compiled a 67-40-8 record (.617) and six consecutive trips to the NSIC Tournament.  He has coached 13 all-region selections and 27 players who have been named all-conference.

As a graduate assistant, he helped direct the Beavers to consecutive appearances in the NSIC Tournament, which included a 14-4-1 overall record and a 9-3-1 mark in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play in 2010 en route to setting program records for the most wins (14) and fewest goals allowed (16) in a single season.

From 2009-10, Janssen served as the director and coach of the Orange City (Iowa) Parks and Recreation soccer program. In addition to instructing young soccer players (ages 5-14), he was responsible for the organization of the coaching staff and production of practice plans.

Janssen also held a youth soccer coaching position at The Dakota Alliance Soccer Club in Sioux Falls, S.D. from 2006-2010.

A native of Sioux Falls, S.D., Janssen was a four-year letterwinner for the men’s soccer team at Northwestern College (Iowa), where he earned three All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) selections, was team captain in 2007 and 2008 and garnered NAIA All-America Honorable Mention accolades following the 2007 campaign. In addition, he played three summers in the Premiere Development League for the Sioux Falls Spitfire.

Janssen currently holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advanced National Diploma and a NSCAA Level 3 Goal-Keeping Diploma

Janssen is a 2009 graduate of Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business education with a coaching endorsement. He is pursuing a master’s degree in sport studies at Bemidji State.
