2/24/2010 - BASEBALL Bauer earns NSIC Player of the Week honors

ST. PAUL, Minn.  -- Junior Dan Bauer (Bemidji, Minn.), Bemidji State University middle infielder/right handed pitcher, has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week by the NSIC office today, for his efforts in a four-game sweep of Northern State University. The award is the first of his career and it marks the second league honor of the season for the Beavers, as junior Ryan Sander (1B/RHP, St. James, Minn.) was named NSIC Pitcher of the Week, Feb. 9. The last time two BSU student-athletes earned a weekly award from the league in the same season was 2003, when three Beavers earned conference laurels.

Bauer went 9-for-15, a .600 batting average, in the four-game sweep of Northern State in a nonconference series at the H.H.H. Metrodome Feb. 21 (10-2, 17-4) and Feb. 22 (4-2, 4-3 (8)). Two of those nine hits were game-winners, both coming in Monday’s doubleheader with the game tied, two outs and in the late innings (bottom 6th in game one and top 8th in game two). He had a team-high in hits and tied a team-high in RBI in the four games with seven. Bauer added three runs, hit his first home run of the season and recorded a double. He stole one base, recorded 11 assists and six putouts playing second base, going all four games without an error. He recorded at least one hit and one RBI in each contest, going a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader, adding three RBI and two runs scored.

He also earned a win on the mound in the 4-2 win against NSU, pitching two innings, allowing two hits and fanning two batters.

The BSU baseball team is 6-2 this season. The Beavers and St. Cloud State University will battle in the Metrodome Feb. 26-27 in nonconference baseball with doubleheaders slated for both days. The games Friday begin at 5 p.m., first pitch Saturday is scheduled for 12:15 p.m.
