2/26/2010 - BASEBALL Beavers earn split with St. Cloud State

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University baseball team earned a split with St. Cloud State University in a nonconference doubleheader at the H.H.H. Metrodome Friday, winning 6-5 in game one before falling 13-2 in game two.

The Beavers (7-3) had a 5-3 lead heading into the seventh inning, batting second as the home team. Some pitching troubles by BSU put runners on first and second with zero outs to start the seventh. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners over to second and third with one out. The Beavers were able to get the second out before a wild pitch put a runner across for St. Cloud State (6-2) and moved the runner on second to third. The next batter walked and made it first and third with two outs. With a full count, SCSU’s Jordan Smith got a hit and scored the game-tying run. BSU got the final out and moved into the bottom of the seventh. The Beavers didn’t deflate after giving-up the runs in the top half, starting the inning with the top of their order. Senior Joe Chism (Great Bend, Kan.) led-off the inning hoping to get BSU started, but popped out. Senior Josh Silvernagel (SS, Bismark, N.D.) was next and ripped a hit up the middle to get the Beavers a runner. Senior Colton Smith (Waddel, Ari.) then hit a shot to right-center field, but the SCSU outfielder made a diving catch to steal a hit and record the second out. Junior Nick Jelacie (OF, Brainerd, Minn.) came to the plate and was the hero for BSU, knocking a base hit up the middle and scoring Silvernagel from first.

The Huskies had a 3-0 lead after two innings of play. The Beavers then powered their way back, scoring two in the fourth off a two-run bomb from Jelacie to left field, scoring Smith. Silvernagel then hit a home run lead-of the sixth inning and tie the game 3-3. Smith followed with a base hit and then Jelacie continued to come-up big for BSU, recording a double to right field off the Metrodome baggie. With runners on second and third and zero outs, junior Dan Bauer (Bemidji, Minn.), reigning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week, was intentionally walked to load the bases. Junior Ryan Sander (1B/RHP, St. James, Minn.) broke the tie with a shot threw the left side of the infield, scoring two runs to give the Beavers a 5-3 lead. The next three batters went down for BSU, the last two on strikes and the game headed into the eventful seventh inning.

Sander started the game on the mound for BSU, throwing 4.0 innings, giving-up three runs. Junior Bryan Jamieson (RHP, Maplewood, Minn.) pitched 2.0 innings, allowing no runs off one hit. Sophomore Ethan Branum (LHP, Brainerd, Minn.) got the win for the Beavers, despite allowing two runs in the seventh inning. Jelacie went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Smith was 2-for-3 in the game and Silvernagel went 2-for-4.

The second game was all about the Huskies, starting with a 5-0 lead after the first inning, 7-0 advantage after two and a 12-0 lead after three. The Beavers finally settled down after the third, but the hole was too large for BSU to overcome, scoring a run in the fourth and in the seventh before falling 13-2.
