In Game 1, a two-out RBI single off the bat of Justin Huether (Sr., OF, Brainerd, Minn.) gave BSU a early 1-0 lead. The lead didn’t last long as Levi Johnson drove in tying run with a two out RBI single through the right side to knot the game at 1-1.
The Jackets took the lead in the bottom of the second as they produced another run with two outs. Bryce Thomas led the second inning off with a single and then moved into scoring position off a Patch Wirtzberger sacrifice bunt. Andrew Hernandez singled to center, scoring Thomas for a 2-1 lead.
Huether answered again for the Beavers as he equalized the score in the fourth on a lead-off home run, his first of the season to tie the score at 2-2. MSUB’s Joe Via gave the Yellow Jackets the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth with a solo blast to left center field giving MSUB a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh Ryan Bohannan (Sr., OF/RHP, Goodyear, Ariz.) reached second with one out but the next two batters were retired giving the Yellow Jackets a 3-2 win.
Ryan Sander (So., INF/RHP, St. James, Minn.) went the distance, but saw is record fall to 2-5 on the season. He worked six innings allowing seven hits and giving up three runs (three earned) with four strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Brian Storm picked up his fifth win of the season for the Yellow Jackets seeing his record move to 5-4 on the season. He worked seven strong innings giving up two runs (two earned) off five hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Huether and Bohannan picked up four of the Beavers five hits in Game 1 as they both had two hits apiece. Huether drove in BSU’s two runs.
The Beavers jumped on the board first in the nightcap as Huether singled and advanced to second on a Yellow Jacket miscue and scored off a Nick Jelacie (So., OF, Brainerd, Minn.) RBI single for a 1-0 lead in the second innings. BSU led the third inning off with a walk by P.J. McIntee (Sr., 2B, Randolph, Minn.) and a bunt single by Josh Silvernagel (Jr., SS/RHP, Bismarck, N.D.) to give BSU runners at the corners. Silvernagel was picked off for the first out of the inning and Colton Smith (So., 3B, Waddell, Ariz.) singled home BSU’s second run of the game to put the Beavers up 2-0. With a runner on base and one out, the next two batters would strikeout and foul out to end the threat for BSU.
Cole Pryor singled to begin the third for MSUB, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Hernandez and a Nick Harris RBI single got the home team on the board. Moments later, Via blasted his second home run of the day, a two run shot giving MSUB a 3-2 lead.
In the fourth BSU regained the lead scoring five runs with two outs for a 7-3 advantage. Jelacie led the inning off with a single to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a ground out and a fly out, Alex Messick (So., C, Lakeville, Minn.) doubled to left field scoring Jelacie to tie the game at 3-3. Back-to-back singles by McIntee and Silvernagel kept the inning alive with Silvernagel’s single giving BSU a 4-3 lead. With two runners on, Smith blasted his third homer of the season over the left field wall giving the Beavers a 7-3 lead.
The Yellow Jackets didn’t go quietly in Game 2 as they battled back in the bottom of the fourth with two runs, helped out by a Beaver miscue. Chris Round reached on an error, followed by a Thomas single to center and a sac bunt from Wirtzberger. Pryor singled home two runs through the middle for a 7-5 score.
BSU went to the bullpen in the fourth bringing in Randy Amos (Sr., RHP, Wilmington, N.C.) who helped the Beavers get out of a jam with a fielder’s choice to end the inning and he eventually went on for the victory.
Neither team scored in the final three innings and BSU would go on for a 7-5 victory. Kevin Morel (Sr., RHP, Shoreview, Minn.) got the start going 3.2 innings allowing five runs (four earned) with seven hits, two strikeouts and a walk. Amos improved his record to 5-0 in 1.1 innings of work while Bohannan picked up his fifth save of the season.
Steve Scott fell to 5-5 for MSUB as he worked seven innings giving up seven runs (seven earned) off 12 hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Silvernagel and Jelacie both went 3-for-4 from the plate to lead the Beavers offensively while Smith drove had four RBI.
The double-header split ended Bemidji State’s 2009 season with a record of 17-36, 8-22 in NSIC play, while MSU-Billings moved to 23-25 overall. Bemidji State’s 17 wins is the most wins by a BSU squad since 2002 (19).
