St. Cloud State takes two from Beavers
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University baseball team fell twice to the St. Cloud State University Huskies in a nonconference doubleheader at the H.H.H. Metrodome Saturday, falling 7-1 and 3-1.

The Huskies (8-2) took a one-run lead after the first inning and the score remained 1-0 until SCSU added two more in the top of the fourth to hold a 3-0 advantage. The Huskies then had a 7-0 lead after five and a half innings before the Beavers (7-5) got on the board in the bottom half of the sixth, starting with a one-out double from senior Colton Smith (Waddel, Ari.). Junior Nick Jelacie (OF, Brainerd, Minn.) walked and junior Dan Bauer (Bemidji, Minn.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Jeff Schaper (1B, Bemidji, Minn.). The sophomore knocked a hit to score Smith and spoil the shut-out for SCSU. Junior Doug Peterson (RHP, Bemidji, Minn.) then came to the plate, but hit into a 4-6-3 double play and end the inning. BSU wasn’t unable to pull any seventh inning magic, falling 7-1.

In game two, the Beavers were able to keep the powerful SCSU offense to just three runs after the Huskies had scored 25 runs in the first three games of the four-game set. St. Cloud State scored one in the first and added another in the third to take an early 2-0 lead. In the top of the fifth, Bauer hit a one-out double to get BSU into scoring position. Junior Ryan Sander (1B/RHP, St. James, Minn.) then came to the plate and got a hit to advance Bauer to third. Peterson made-up for hitting into a double play in the previous game with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bauer and cut the Huskies lead in half at 2-1. The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth when SCSU got an insurance run to take a 3-1 lead heading into the seventh inning. Jelacie beat-out a throw to first with one out and put a runner on the base path for BSU. Unfortunately, the next two Beaver batters went down and the game ended 3-1.

The Beavers will play Minnesota State University, Mankato March 2-3 in a four-game series at the Metrodome. The doubleheader March 2 begins at 5 p.m., while the March 3 twin bill starts at 1 p.m. The games will serve as the final trip to the Metrodome for BSU.
