Beavers go 2-0 in day two of RussMatt Tournament

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- After scoring just two runs in the season opener the Bemidji State University baseball team posted 19 runs on day two of the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. Wednesday, earning a 9-1 win against Indiana Wesleyan and 10-8 extra inning (11) victory against Arizona Christian University.

The Beavers (2-1) used a six-run first inning and the strong pitching of freshman right-hander Miles Campbell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) to down Indiana Wesleyan. BSU rattled off four straight hits to open the bottom half of the first and never looked back, getting production from freshmen Cole Bjorge (Prior Lake, Minn.), Eric Kallevig (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Zach Braun (Lakeville, Minn.) and newcomer junior Mauricio Gomez (Caracas, Venezuela) in the early going. Campbell threw six innings and fanned four batters.

Game two of the day was more of a battle. BSU scored one in the top of the first, but ACU posted three in the bottom half and owned a 3-1 lead after one. BSU scored twice in the top of the fourth to knot the contest at 3-3, but again the Eagles responded with a four-spot in the bottom half to grab a 7-3 lead. The Beavers added one in the fifth and then a bases clearing double by Bruan in the top of the eighth inning tied the game at 7-7.

Freshman left-hander Aaron Young (Urbandale, Iowa) came into pitch for BSU in the fifth and held ACU scoreless through the eighth. Sophomore transfer Ryan Brezinski (RHP, Regina, Saskatchewan) took the ball in the bottom of the ninth and was able to keep the Eagles off the board and push the game to extras. BSU scored in the top of the 10th, but for the third time in the game, ACU responded in the bottom half and tallied one to bring it to the 11th. The Beavers scored two runs with two outs in the top of the 11th and then relied on Brezinski in the bottom half to close out the contest. After allowing the bases to get loaded with two outs, he struck out the Eagles’ final batter to hand the win to BSU.

Freshman Dylan Webb (Phoenix, Ariz.) went 3-for-5 with two RBI, including plating the 10th run for BSU. Braun posted four RBI for BSU. Brezinski earned his first win in the green and white, striking out three batters. Freshman Ryan Rothing (RHP, Belgrade, Mont.) made his first start for the Beavers going four innings, allowing seven runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
