Beavers open spring trip in Arizona 2-1
PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Bemidji State University baseball team opened its 2012 spring trip at the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational 2-1 March 3-4 with a 14-11 win against Benedictine University at Springfield March 3 and a doubleheader split with Simpson College (Iowa) March. 4. The Beavers won game one of the twin bill 7-4 in nine innings, before they fell 5-2 in game two to move to 4-3 in nonconference play this season.

The Beavers took a 10-0 lead into the sixth inning of the nine-inning affair against the Bulldogs, as it posted two in the first and second innings before it tallied three in the third and fifth frames. BSU got five shutout innings from junior left-hander Phil Bray (Chatfield, Minn.), as he allowed just one hit before Benedictine posted a five-spot in the top of the sixth inning. Four of those runs were credited to Bray as he gave-up three straight singles and then a grand slam over the left field wall that ended his outing.

Fortunately for Bray and BSU the Beaver bats were still hot and two runs in the sixth and another deuce in the seventh gave the team enough runs to endure the Bulldogs’ late push that left them three runs short. Bray picked-up his second win of the season in the game. Lead-off man junior Trevor Purvis (OF/P, Rio Rancho, N.M.) went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Junior Jaryd Marks (RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while four Beavers total had multi-hit games. Sophomore Dylan Webb (INF, Ahwatukee, Ariz.) and junior Lewis Baumann (MIF, Colorado Springs, Colo.) each posted three runs scored with one hit and one RBI.

Trailing 4-0 in game one to Simpson College the Beavers took advantage of Storm errors to move runners and tallied a single run in the fifth and sixth innings. Down to its last out in the seventh, BSU relied on the top of the order to find some offensive production. Purvis drew a walk, sophomore Zach Braun (C, Lakeville, Minn.) singled and then junior Logan Kalis (RHP/1B, Little Falls, Minn.) delivered a double to score both base runners and knot the game 4-4.

Senior right-hander Kaleb Dingman (Rawling, Wyo.) pitched out of a bases loaded jam with a double play ball in the sixth inning and then was again handed the ball in the seventh, where he got out of the inning in four batters and the contest went to extra innings. After a scoreless eighth, the Beavers posted three in the top of the ninth. The top of the order again came up big as Purvis and Braun singled to set-up a triple from Kalis that scored them both. Senior Juan Molero (Maracaibo, Venezuela) plated Kalis and the Beavers earned the three-run victory.

Sophomore right-hander Miles Campbell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) started for BSU and threw five innings, allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts. Junior Ryan Van Someren (RHP, Milaca, Minn.) earned the win for the Beavers with a scoreless eighth inning where he allowed just one hit. Kalis finished 2-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored. Purvis posted his second three-hit performance of the trip, as he went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Bruan and Molero each had two hits for BSU.

The bats went silent in game two against Simpson, as BSU had just five hits after it totaled 25 in the previous two games. The game was a 1-1 contest after three, but the Storm scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth to own a 4-1 lead, en route to a 5-2 victory. Simpson recorded 12 hits in the game.

Kalis took the loss on the bump for the Beavers, as he threw four innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with two K’s. All five hits came from different batters for BSU. Marks and Molero each had an RBI, while Purvis and Braun scored the runs.

The Beavers continue their spring trip March 6 in a nine-inning game against Malone University starting at 11 a.m. central.
