Beavers outlast Malone in 15-14 victory

MESA, Ariz. - Senior Juan Molero (OF, Maracaibo, Venezuela) drove in the tying runs in the top of the ninth with a triple to left center and later scored the winning run as the Bemidji State University baseball team downed Malone University Tuesday 15-14 in a nine inning contest in Mesa, Ariz. at the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational to improve to 5-3 in 2012.

The marathon contest lasted over three hours as the teams combined for 84 at bats and the Pioneers walked 13 batters. Malone posted 18 hits, while BSU had 10. The Beavers scored four in the top of the first, but the Pioneers responded with a five spot in the bottom half of the inning and followed it with four more in the second, en route to a 10-6 lead after three frames.

The Beavers posted a five-run inning in the fifth and added run in the sixth and owned a 12-10 advantage through six innings. But, Malone tallied four in the bottom of the seventh and the lead was back in the Pioneers’ favor at 14-12, heading into the top of the ninth. Junior Riley Hirsch (C, Little Falls, Minn.) singled up the middle to start comeback and with one out, junior Jaryd Marks (RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) walked to set-up the Molero triple. Sophomore Kean Paxton (2B, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) guided Molero home to hand BSU the lead with a sacrifice fly to right.

Marks got out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth and was again handed the ball in the ninth for his first win opportunity of the season. He allowed a runner to reach third in the ninth before fanning the final two outs of the game and earn his first win of his career at Bemidji State.

Molero had two key hits in the game to record five RBIs and score twice. Hirsch had two hits and four runs scored with three RBIs, batting in the number two spot. In the nine hole, junior Lewis Baumann (MIF, Colorado Springs, Colo.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Junior Ryan Anderson (RHP, Lino Lakes, Minn.) started for the Beavers and allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 11 hits with four strikeouts. Marks allowed just one hit and struckout three batters on the bump, while going 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The Beavers have a day off before they continue their spring trip March 8 in another nine-inning match-up with Malone starting at 10:30 a.m. central.
