Beavers open home schedule with Minnesota Duluth

This Week: The Bemidji State University baseball team begins its home schedule March 31 and April 1 with a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference four-game series with University of Minnesota Duluth. Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., while Sunday’s twinbill is set for a 12 p.m. start.

Conference Doubleheaders: All conference doubleheaders will play a seven inning game first, followed by a nine inning contest. The nine inning game has a 10-run rule after seven complete innings.

About Bemidji State: The Beavers are 10-8 overall and 3-1 in NSIC play after going 3-1 at Concordia University, St. Paul March 24-25. BSU won the first three games of the series before falling in the finale. Junior transfer Jaryd Marks posted a hit in each game and seven total to increase his team-best hitting streak to 13. He leads the team with a .377 batting average and his .607 slugging percentage guides the squad and sits eighth in the NSIC. Junior lefty Phil Bray is 4-1 this season to rank tied for third in the NSIC in wins. Junior right-hander Logan Kalis has 21 strikeouts in 2012 to lead the team and rank tied for 10th in the league.
    
Last Time Out:
The Beavers traveled to Concordia-St. Paul to open league play and after sweeping the first day went on to split the finale. BSU had to come from behind in both its victories Saturday, winning 4-2 after trailing 2-0 after two innings in game one and finding a 12-11 victory in game two after trailing 8-3 through three frames. Kalis threw a four-hitter with six strikeouts in game one Sunday to guide BSU to a 7-3 win before it fell 10-4 in game four. Marks batted .438 and posted a .938 slugging percentage with two doubles and two home runs in the four games to lead the Beavers at the plate and earn NSIC Player of the Week honors.            

About Minnesota Duluth: The Bulldogs are 5-11 overall and 0-4 in NSIC play after heading to then-No. 22 Minnesota State March 24-25 and getting outscored 27-14 in a four-game series. Marcus Riewer leads the team at the plate with a .390 average, 23 hits and 11 runs scored. Collin Stinogel has started five games for UMD and owns a 1-1 record with a 3.52 ERA. In 23 innings pitched he has allowed 11 runs (nine earned) on 18 hits with nine strikeouts.  

Last Action vs UMD: Last season the Beavers traveled to Duluth, Minn. and played three games before losing the fourth due to darkness. BSU lost the opener 6-3, but rebounded to win 9-5 and 2-1 (11) in the last two games. The Beavers were leading 2-0 after four innings before the fourth game was called by the umpires. Head coach Tim Bellew is 5-16 all-time against the Bulldogs as the BSU skipper, with a 3-5 home mark.

Team Notes:

• BSU has hosted 18 games in March all-time and stands 4-14 in those contests.
• The Beavers are No. 9 in the latest NCBWA Division II Central Region Poll (March 27). BSU has been ranked or received votes in each poll this season, with a highest ranking of No. 5 (March 13).
