BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University baseball team split a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with Upper Iowa University Thursday at the BSU Baseball Field. The Beavers won game one 12-1, but a six-run top of the ninth for the Peacocks in game two handed the road team an 8-5 victory. BSU is 13-11 overall and 6-4 in NSIC play.
Junior left-hander Phil Bray (Chatfield, Minn.) moved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in NSIC play with a game one win. He allowed just two hits and was supported by the Beaver bats, as BSU posted 11 hits. Junior Ryan Anderson (RHP, Lino Lakes, Minn.) had a strong outing in game two, but had a no decision after allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts.
Bray had his third straight complete game in the first contest, going seven strong and allowing the one run on two hits with eight strikeouts. He allowed the one run in the top of the second inning and UIU had a 1-0 lead, but the Beavers came back with three in the bottom half of the frame and posted three runs to own the 3-1 advantage.
The UIU starter came out of the game after the first after injuring himself to force the Peacocks to go the bullpen early. Mitch Luebbe came into the game for UIU and allowed the three runs in the second. After junior Jaryd Marks (RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) drew a walk, junior right-hander Logan Kalis (Little Falls, Minn.) recorded his first home run of the day with a shot to left. Senior Juan Molero (Maracaibo, Venezuela) then came up and leaned into a pitch to take first base. He moved to third on a failed pick-off attempt by Luebbe and sophomore Dylan Webb (INF, Phoenix, Ariz.) drove him home with a double to center field.
Marks and Kalis posted back-to-back singles up the middle with one out in the third. Molero moved them over with a ground out to second and with the bases loaded after a walk, junior Matt Ellinghuysen (3B/C, Saint Charles, Minn.) delivered a double down the left field line that scored Marks and Kalis for a 5-1 lead after three.
The score remained 5-1 until the sixth when the Beavers opened up the game with a seven-run inning that saw Kalis hit his second home run over the left field fence – this time a 3-run shot – and Webb send one over the left center fence for his first homer of the season.
Bray got the Peacocks 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh for the 12-1 win. Kalis went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored to guide the Beavers to 11 hits – six of which went for extra bases. Marks finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.
The Beavers took a 1-0 game two lead with a single run in the second, produced by the middle and bottom of the line-up. Sophomore Kean Paxton (2B, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) got BSU started with a deep shot to center that rolled to the fence and put him on second. Junior Riley Hirsch (C, Little Falls, Minn.) singled to left center to move Paxton to third and then Ellinghuysen plated him with on an error by the UIU shortstop.
The Peacocks scored in the top of the fifth to break-up the shutout, but the Beavers responded with a three-spot in the bottom half to own a 4-1 lead. Single runs by each team in the eighth set-up the six-run ninth for the Peacocks. UIU got the final three runs on a shot over the left center field off BSU reliever junior Ryan Brezinski (RHP, Regina, Saskatchewan).
Seven-hole hitter Hirsch went 3-for-4 for BSU with two RBI and a run scored, while nine-spot hitter junior Lewis Baumann (MIF, Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI.
The Beavers and Upper Iowa conclude the four-game series Friday with a doubleheader slated for a 12 p.m. start.
