BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University baseball team left 23 runners on the bases in 8-1 and 8-4 loses to Upper Iowa University in an Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader Friday at the BSU Baseball Field. The Peacocks took 3-of-4 from the Beavers in the series, as BSU fell to 13-13 overall and 6-6 in NSIC play.
Junior right-hander Logan Kalis (Little Falls, Minn.) started for BSU in game one and allowed one run in the top of the first, but the Beavers responded in the bottom of the second to knot the game 1-1 after two innings. Senior Juan Molero (Maracaibo, Venezuela) opened the inning with a single to left, then advanced to second on an error by UIU left fielder. Sophomore Dylan Webb (INF, Phoenix, Ariz.) followed with a slicing single to right center and moved Molero to third. Junior Riley Hirsch (C, Little Falls, Minn.) then put the ball deep in the hole at shortstop for an infield single that scored Molero. Despite a first and second situation with no outs the Beavers failed to score another run and left the bases loaded.
The Peacocks scored one in the third and two in the fourth to own a 4-1 lead before opening up an 8-1 lead with a four-run fifth that ended the day of Kalis. BSU failed to get a run across the rest of the way, posting seven hits and leaving 11 runners on the paths.
Kalis allowed eight runs (five earned) on nine hits in four and one-third inning. He had three strikeouts and two walks. Senior Kaleb Dingman (RHP, Rawling, Wyo.) threw 2.2 innings and allowed zero runs on two hits. Junior Trevor Purvis (OF/P, Rio Rancho, N.M.) and Hirsch recorded multi-hit games for the Beavers, both going 2-for-3 with Hirsch getting the lone RBI.
Junior Ryan Van Someren (RHP, Milaca, Minn.) had just 15 pitches through two innings and got the first two outs of the third inning to retire the first eight Peacock batters, but three straight hits scored two runs and UIU owned a 2-0 lead through three. Four Peacock runs in the fourth made it 6-0 in the favor of the road team.
BSU got one back in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the seventh, but the Peacocks scored one in the top of the eighth for the 7-2 lead. Junior Lewis Baumann (MIF, Colorado Springs, Colo.) sent his first home run of the season over the left field fence to score junior Matt Ellinghuysen (3B/C, Saint Charles, Minn.) to turn the scoreboard to 7-4. UIU got one back in the ninth and that is where it stood, 8-4.
The Beavers recorded nine hits in game two and left 12 base runners. Van Someren went 3.2 innings and allowed six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Miles Campbell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) relieved Van Someren and pitched 3.1 scoreless innings and gave-up two hits with four strike outs. Junior Jaryd Marks (RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) threw the last two innings and allowed two runs on five hits with 2 K’s.
Three BSU batters posted two hits. Baumann went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run to post three RBI and a run scored. Sophomore catcher Zach Braun (Lakeville, Minn.) went 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Marks doubled twice for his 11th and 12th team-leading two-baggers of the season to go 2-for-5 in the game.
The Beavers are more than halfway through their 14-game homestand and next host No. 7 St. Cloud State University April 11 for a NSIC doubleheader slated to begin at 2 p.m.
