Beavers go on the road to face UMC April 18 and MSU April 21-22

This Week: The Bemidji State University baseball team takes to the road for six Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games April 18, 21-22. The Beavers battle University of Minnesota, Crookston April 18 at 4 p.m. before traveling to Mankato, Minn. to play No. T-8 Minnesota State University, Mankato April 21-22. Both doubleheaders at MSU are slated for a 12 p.m. first pitch.

Conference Doubleheaders:
All conference doubleheaders will play a seven inning game first, followed by a nine inning contest. The nine inning game has a 10-run rule after seven complete innings. If game one goes into extra innings the second game will be played as a seven inning contest, instead of nine.

About Bemidji State: The Beavers (15-17, 8-10 NSIC) concluded a 14-game homestand April 11, 14-15. BSU split a doubleheader with then-No. 8 St. Cloud State April 11 as it scored five runs in the final two innings of game one to erase a 4-0 deficit and earn its second win against a nationally-ranked opponent this season. The other win came in the season opener against then-No. 15 Minnesota State. The Beavers split the first doubleheader with Augustana College April 14 with another dramatic win. Down 5-3 through five and half, BSU scored one in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to pick-up a 7-5 victory. BSU went 5-9 in the homestand and now goes on the road for the next eight. Junior lefty Phil Bray is 7-2 overall and 4-1 in NSIC play. His 3.33 ERA (15 in NSIC) and .222 opposing batting average (4th in NSIC) leads the team, as does 48.2 innings pitched (t4th NSIC) and 37 strikeouts (t8th in NSIC). Junior Jaryd Marks is the team’s batting average (.327), hits (36), doubles (tied, 9), RBI (tied, 23) and total bases (53) leader.             

About Minnesota, Crookston: Minnesota, Crookston has an overall record of 8-23 and NSIC record of 3-15 after dropping a four game series to Winona State University this past weekend. The Warriors won by scores of 13-2, 17-9, 7-6 and 17-4 in seven innings. The Golden Eagles are led by Josh Brehmer (So, 2B, Roseville, Minn.) who is hitting .384 (43-112) with 16 runs batted in (RBI). Matt Korte (So, RHP/3B/OF, St. Cloud, Minn.) is hitting .357 (20-56). Charlie Pelzer (So, 2B, Roseville, Minn.) is hitting .347 (34-98) with 12 RBI. Nick Kelzer (So, RHP, Delano, Minn.) is 2-2 on the mound with a 5.02 earned run average (ERA) and 18 strikeouts.

Last Action vs UMC: After being delayed a few hours due to rain/sleet and snow in Bemidji April 20 last season the Beavers downed UMC 19-1 and 5-2 for a mid-week doubleheader. Head coach Tim Bellew is 12-1 all-time against the Golden Eagles as the BSU skipper. Due to scheduling and cancellations, Bellew has never coached BSU in Crookston and the last time the Beavers traveled west on Highway 2 was April 23-24, 2005 when they went 4-0.

About Minnesota State: Minnesota State (24-6, 12-2 NSIC) went 3-1 in the NSIC this past week after taking two from Wayne State on April 11 before splitting with St. Cloud State on Saturday...Junior Mike Eckhart led MSU with six hits while posting a .462 batting average and knocking in two runs...Senior Pat Dockendorf led the Mavericks with a .556 batting average while also connecting on his fifth home run of the season and driving in four runs...Junior right-handed pitcher Nick Sutherland earned two saves and a win last week after allowing no runs on three hits in 2.1 innings of work...Tyler Ockuly led MSU with eight strikeouts as he allowed five hits in a complete-game shutout in a 1-0 win over Wayne State to earn NSIC Player of the Week honors...Sophomore Todd Standish was the hero in game one against Wayne State as the Mavericks rallied back from a 3-2 deficit in the final inning as Standish recorded the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh

Last Action vs MSU: BSU split a nonconference doubleheader with the Mavericks Feb. 22 to open the 2012 slate, winning 6-2 before falling 4-0 to then-No. 15 Minnesota State. Last season BSU hosted MSU for the season-finale and fell in all four games of the series. Head coach Tim Bellew is 5-10 all-time against the Vikings as the BSU skipper and has never traveled to Mankato, Minn. for a game as the BSU head coach. The last time BSU visited MSU was April 10, 1981.

• Junior lefty Phil Bray is 7-2 this season to rank tied for first in the NSIC and 20th nationally in wins.
• Junior Logan Kalis’ five HR is T6th in the NSIC.
• Junior Jaryd Marks and senior Juan Molero have nine doubles this season to rank tied for 13th in the NSIC.
• Junior leadoff Trevor Purvis has walked 21 times to sit tied for fifth in the NSIC - four behind the leader.
• Marks posted a hit in every game in March to record a team season-best hitting streak of 14 games (March 3-31). BSU went 10-6 in March.
• The Beavers went 12-8 in the first 20 games of the season to record their best 20 game record since the 2000 team went 12-8.
• BSU was 10th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
