Beard and Gomez garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Megan Beard (Sr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.) and Mauricio Gomez (3B, 6-1, 205, Sr., R/R, Caracas, Venezuela) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of April 9-15.

Beard hit .333 with four runs scored and five RBIs for the BSU softball team. She went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs in a 7-1 win over Concordia University-St. Paul. The win was the first for BSU over the Golden Bears since 2009. In game two against St. Cloud State University April 15, Beard had a bases clearing double to finish the game with three RBIs and one run scored.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the first of the season for Beard and the fifth for BSU softball team. Beard follows three-time recipient Courtney Anderson (Sr., Virginia, Minn.), who won the award March 7, 14 and April 11, while Crystal Bowen (Jr., Duluth, Minn.) was selected for the award March 28.

Gomez batted .389 in six games (7-for-18) for the BSU baseball team in a 2-4 week against two of the top three teams in the NSIC in No. 8 St. Cloud State and Augustana College. He totaled nine bases with two runs scored, two doubles, a stolen base and an RBI. The RBI proved vital in a 5-4 win against SCSU, as he singled through the right side - in his only at-bat of the game - to plate the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning April 11. In the six games he posted a .500 slugging percentage, .389 on-base percentage and .909 fielding percentage with six assists, four putouts and one error.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week marks the first time Gomez has been honored by the organization, while it is the fourth of 2012 for the BSU baseball team. Jaryd Marks (Jr., RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) was selected for the award Mark 21, Logan Kalis (1B/RHP/OF, Jr., Little Falls, Minn.) earned the award March 28 and Phil Bray (Jr., LHP, Chatfield, Minn.) garnered the award last week (April 11).

Bemidji State softball will return to action with doubleheaders Sat., April 21 at Winona State University and Sun., April 22 at Upper Iowa University. The games will wrap up BSU’s NSIC slate for the 2012 campaign.

The BSU team’s next action is slated for April 18 at University of Minnesota, Crookston with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
