Beavers host Huskies April 11 and Vikings April 14-15

This Week: The Bemidji State University baseball team concludes its 14-game homestand with six Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games. The Beavers host nationally-ranked St. Cloud State University April 11 in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. and Augustana College in a four-game series April 14-15. Both doubleheaders against the Vikings are slated for a 12 p.m. first pitch.

Conference Doubleheaders: All conference doubleheaders will play a seven inning game first, followed by a nine inning contest. The nine inning game has a 10-run rule after seven complete innings. If game one goes into extra innings the second game will be played as a seven inning contest, instead of nine.

About Bemidji State: The Beavers are 13-13 overall and 6-6 in NSIC play for ninth in the league standings after going 1-3 against Upper Iowa University April 5-6. After winning game one 12-1 the Beavers let a 5-2 lead through eight slip away, as the Peacocks posted six runs in the top of the ninth to win 8-5. BSU struggled to get hits with runners on base on day two and left 23 on the base paths to fall 8-1 and 8-4. Junior Lewis Baumann posted a .429 batting average batting in the nine spot of the line-up versus the Peacocks. He went 6-for-14 with four RBIs and two runs scored and recorded a .714 slugging percentage with a .429 on base percentage. Junior lefty Phil Bray improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in NSIC play with his third consecutive complete game victory for the Beavers April 5. His 3.00 ERA (10th in NSIC) and .201 opposing batting average (4th in NSIC) leads the team, as does 42.2 innings pitched (2nd NSIC) and 29 strikeouts (t12th in NSIC). Junior Jaryd Marks is the team’s batting average (.333), hits (30), doubles (9), RBI (tied, 21) and total bases (47) leader.             

About St. Cloud State:
St. Cloud State is 22-7 overall and 7-3 in NSIC play (third in NSIC standings) and ranks No. 10 (April 10) and No. 7 (April 3) in the two major national polls (listed on page 5). The Huskies split their first home NSIC doubleheader of the season April 3 against Southwest Minnesota State University with a 4-1 win and 6-2 loss. SCSU took game one as junior Scott Lieser earned a complete-game win to improve to 6-2 on the mound this season, before SCSU dropped game two to the Mustangs. Junior leadoff hitter Phil Imholte leads the team with a .379 batting average and guides the squad and is 36th in the nation with 20 stolen bases this season. SCSU has four pitchers with at least four wins this season and as a staff own a 2.72 ERA and .219 opposing batting average.

Last Action vs SCSU:
Last season the Beavers traveled to St. Cloud, Minn. for a mid-week doubleheader and fell to then-No. 18 St. Cloud State 9-4 and 9-2. BSU had 12 hits in the two games, two of which came from active players in 2012. BSU has lost the last five meetings against the Huskies, last winning at the H.H.H. Metrodome 6-5 Feb. 26, 2010. Head coach Tim Bellew is 3-11-1 all-time against the Huskies as the BSU skipper, with a 1-1 home mark. The last time St. Cloud State visited Bemidji was April 18, 2006 (BSU split - L, 9-4 and W, 6-5).

About Augustana: Augustana is 15-10 overall and 10-4 in NSIC play (second in league standings) after it went 4-2 last week in six conference games. April 3, the Vikings topped Wayne State 6-2 before falling to the Wildcats 10-1. Augie split in the opening doubleheader at University of Minnesota, Crookston April 5, beating UMC 13-3 and losing 2-0. The April 6 twinbill resulted in 2-0 and 10-0 wins for Augustana. After he posted a record-tying 17 strikeouts against Minnesota, Crookston April 6, right-handed pitcher Derek Hansen was named the NSIC Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA Central Region Pitcher of the Week. He is 3-3 with a 1.53 ERA this season. Brian Knight leads the Vikings at the plate with a .375 batting average and 24 runs scored. Augie will play at Southwest Minnesota State April 11 before visiting BSU.

Last Action vs Augie: Last season BSU traveled to Sioux Falls, S.D. and fell 7-3, 4-1, 2-1 and 10-0 (7) in a four-game NSIC series. Head coach Tim Bellew is 3-10 all-time against the Vikings as the BSU skipper, with a 0-4 home mark. The last win BSU recorded against AC was a 3-2 win at Augie March 28, 2009.

Team/Player Notes
• Junior lefty Phil Bray is 6-1 this season to rank tied for first in the NSIC and 23rd nationally in wins.
• Junior Jaryd Marks has nine doubles this season to rank tied for fifth in the NSIC.
• Junior leadoff Trevor Purvis has walked 19 times to sit tied for second in the NSIC - one behind the leader.
• Marks posted a hit in every game in March to record a team season-best hitting streak of 14 games (March 3-31). BSU went 10-6 in March.
• The Beavers went 12-8 in the first 20 games of the season to record their best 20 game record since the 2000 team went 12-8.
• BSU was 10th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
• The Beavers fell out of the NCBWA Division II Central Region Poll April 9, marking the first time this season BSU hasn’t been ranked or received votes in the poll this season. The Beavers were No. 10 April 3 and had their highest ranking of No. 5 March 13.
