Beavers close regular season at Northern State with playoff possibilities

This Week: The Bemidji State University baseball team wraps-up the regular  season with a four-game series at Northern State University May 5-6. The May 5 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start (pushed back an hour to original schedule due to NSU graduation) and the May 6 double dip is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.

Conference Doubleheaders:
All conference doubleheaders will play a seven inning game first, followed by a nine inning contest. The nine inning game has a 10-run rule after seven complete innings. If game one goes into extra innings the second game will be played as a seven inning contest, instead of nine.

Playoff Picture:
At the end of the regular season the top six teams with the best conference winning percentage makes the 2012 NSIC Tournament in Mankato, Minn. May 9-12. The tournament is double elimination. The current top five teams are locked in, Minnesota State, St. Cloud State, Augustana, Wayne State and Winona State. The Beavers’ best chance to be the team in that sixth spot and make the postseason is to win all four games May 5-6 to get to 18-18, a .500 conference winning percentage. The only two other teams that can reach or surpass .500 are Upper Iowa (15-16, host Minnesota State May 5-6) and Concordia-St. Paul (12-16, at Wayne State May 5-6). If BSU goes 3-1 on the weekend it brings Minnesota Duluth (13-18, host U-Mary May 5-6) into the equation. The Beavers would still have a chance to make the tournament if they go 2-2, but would need UIU, CU and UMD to lose more than two games on the weekend. BSU needs to play all the games to get to .500, but rain is forecasted for Saturday.
