BEMIDJI, Minn. – Head Bemidji State University baseball coach Tim Bellew has announced the 2013 baseball schedule. The Beavers begin the season Feb. 15 at H.H.H. Metrodome in Minneapolis and open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play March 23 in Winona, Minn.
BSU starts the season against Northern State University in Minneapolis with two, seven inning games on the docket. The next day, the Beavers play one of the newcomers to the NSIC, University of Sioux Falls, who they have not played since 2003 (lost 4-1). BSU will battle Wayne State College Feb. 21 in a Metrodome doubleheader, followed by the two-time reigning conference champions, Minnesota State University, Mankato Feb. 26 for two, seven inning contests. Bemidji State will finish off the Dome season with a March 4 doubleheader against University of Minnesota, Duluth.
For the third consecutive season, the Beavers will head south for spring break and travel to Arizona March 10-18 for six games at the Tucson Invitational Games. The invite will conclude the 2013 nonconference schedule.
Conference play begins with a 10-game road trip, starting at Winona State University March 23-24. Like all NSIC dates are scheduled, the teams will play a seven-inning game, followed by a nine-inning contest. Then the Beavers travel to St. Paul, Minn. to play Concordia University, St. Paul in a four-game series and wrap-up road play with a doubleheader at Wayne State April 3.
The trip to WSC closes a 20-game road trip, as April 6 opens a 12-game homestand that runs April 6-21. The Beavers take to the BSU Baseball Field for the first time against University of Mary in a four-game series April 6-7. Following the series is a pair of mid-week two-game sets against Augustana College April 10 and Minnesota State April 17. The homestand ends with a four-game series against Upper Iowa University April 20-21.
Next, BSU travels to University of Minnesota, Crookston for a doubleheader April 24, followed by a four-game series at Minot State University to close the NSIC road schedule. Along with Sioux Falls, Minot State is also new to the conference. BSU and MSU have met just three times, with Bemidji State holding a 2-1 series advantage.
The Beavers will finish the regular season at home May 1-4. First up is a double-dip against Southwest Minnesota State University May 1, who BSU put up a combined 22 runs against in a doubleheader last season, followed by the regular season finale May 3-4, a four-game series against St. Cloud State University.
With the additions of Minot State and Sioux Falls, the NSIC Tournament will expand from a six, to an eight-team format. The tournament is scheduled for May 8-11in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Beavers finished the 2012 season 23-27 to tie for third most wins in a season in the 61-year program history. BSU posted a 16-20 mark in league play for eighth in the final NSIC standings. BSU returns 10 key position players and the majority of its pitching staff in 2013. Included in the returners are junior All-American catcher Zach Braun (Lakeville, Minn.) and senior first-team all-region pick Logan Kalis (RHP/1B/OF, Little Falls, Minn.), coming off banner seasons for the Beavers with goals of improving a BSU team that has failed to make the NSIC postseason tournament since 2008.
