Beavers fall to Northern State in season opener, 4-2 and 7-2

MINNEAPOLIS (H.H.H. Metrodome) – The Bemidji State University baseball team went 0-2 to begin the 2013 season with a pair of losses to Northern State University in a nonconference doubleheader at the H.H.H. Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. BSU fell 4-2 in game one and 7-2 in game two in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Metrodome Baseball Classic.

The Beavers scored two runs in the first inning of game one, but failed to post another run the rest of the way. Junior Zach Braun (C, Lakeville, Minn.) plated senior outfielder Trevor Purvis (Rio Rancho, N.M.) with a single, then senior Jaryd Marks (RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) followed with a double that scored Braun for a 2-0 Beaver lead.

Senior lefty Phil Bray (Chatfield, Minn.) started and threw four strong innings before allowing four unearned runs in the fifth, as NSU posted a four-run inning to own the 4-2 lead. The Wolves scored all the runs on two outs and were unearned due to a Beaver error on the second batter of the inning.

BSU posted three hits in the first and one in the fourth for just four in the game. Marks went 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Bray allowed seven hits and fanned two batters, while sophomore reliever Jack Hegarty (INF/RHP, Brainerd, Minn.) pitched 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit.

Game two was all Northern State until BSU avoided the shutout with two runs in the seventh. The Wolves scored one in the first, before tacking on five runs in the second on five hits, knocking out the Beaver starter senior Ryan Anderson (RHP, Lino Lakes, Minn.).

BSU failed to produce a hit until the fifth inning, getting the hit off the bat of sophomore Cole Bjorge (OF, Prior Lake, Minn.), but at the end of the frame the Beavers faced a 7-0 deficit.

Back-to-back walks in the top of the seventh set up a two run inning for BSU. Senior Logan Kalis (1B/RHP/OF, Little Falls, Minn.) drew a lead-off walk, then sophomore Steven Prichard (3B, Mesa, Ariz.) replaced him on the base paths and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Senior third baseman Matt Ellinghuysen (St. Charles, Minn.) also walked and would cross the plate on a senior Lewis Baumann (SS, Colorado Springs, Colo.) single to right.

BSU only mustered three hits in the game, two of which came from the eight and ninth spot in the batting lineup. Anderson allowed six earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Senior right-hander Ryan Van Someren (Milaca, Minn.) replaced Anderson and hurled four innings. He allowed just one earned run on two hits with one strikeout.

The Beavers continue the NSIC Metrodome Classic Saturday with a nonconference doubleheader against University of Sioux Falls beginning at 6 a.m.
