TUCSON, Ariz. (Kino Sports Complex) – The Bemidji State University baseball team put together a complete pitching, batting and defensive performance Thursday in a sweep of day two of its spring trip in Arizona at the Tucson Invitational Games. BSU defeated Minot State University 12-2 (10-run rule in the eighth) and Southwest Minnesota State University 8-5.
Bemidji State jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings, after scoring four runs on four hits and two Minot State errors in game one of the afternoon. Senior Logan Kalis (RHP/OF, Little Falls, Minn.) started the inning with a double to right field and two batters later, sophomore Cole Bjorge (OF, Prior Lake, Minn.) delivered a bases loaded double down the left field line to score three runs. Bjorge would later score after stealing third and advancing home on an error by the MISU catcher.
The BSU lead moved to 7-1 after five innings when the green and white posted a three run frame on two hits and one Minot State error. A pair of walks to two of the first three batters prompted a pitching change, but both runners would cross home plate before the inning played out. The frame included an RBI single from senior catcher Riley Hirsch (Little Falls, Minn.) and senior Jaryd Marks (1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.).
Senior shortstop Lewis Baumann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded his second home run of the season when he put a ball over the left field fence to give BSU an 8-2 lead in the sixth. He has the only bombs of the year for Bemidji State.
Marks kept the Minot State bats at bay and threw more than 100 pitches in six innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
The 8-2 lead would be more than enough for victory, but BSU would add two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to invoke the 10-run rule in the nine-inning contest.
Hirsch posted three hits in four at bats and added two runs and an RBI. Baumann also posted a multi-hit game, as he went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. BSU didn’t commit an error in the game, while the three Minot State errors led to three Bemidji State runs.
Batting the top half of the first inning in game two of the day, the Beavers took a 1-0 lead when they strung together three straight hits. Kalis posted a two-out double down the left field line and was plated by a Marks single to center. BSU added two more in the second to increase its lead to 3-0. Both runs again came with two outs. Hirsch doubled to right to create a second and third situation for senior outfielder Trevor Purvis (Rio Rancho, N.M.), who singled to right to score both runners.
The Beavers more than doubled their lead in the fourth and opened a 7-0 lead after a four-run inning. After loading the bases with no outs, Hirsch put the ball deep enough to right to score freshman Cody Jenkins (2B, Bemidji, Minn.), senior Matt Ellinghuysen (3B, St. Charles, Minn.) scored on a throwing error, Purvis came through with another hit with runners in scoring position and would later score on a Marks infield single.
The seven runs would prove to be enough, although three SMSU runs in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh would move the contest to just a two-run game at 7-5 in favor of BSU. The Beavers added an insurance run in the eighth when Kalis doubled to left and scored Hirsch.
Senior righty Ryan Anderson (Lino Lakes, Minn.) posted a strong outing and went six complete innings to improve to 1-1. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts. Kalis hurled the final two innings and picked up his first save of the season. He allowed two hits and fanned three batters. The BSU pitching staff allowed 10 hits and didn’t issue a free pass in the game.
BSU had 15 hits against SMSU with two players recording three-hit games. Purvis went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Kalis posted a 3-for-5 game and added a run scored and an RBI. Four Beavers had two-hit games, which included Hirsch’s lead-off 2-for-4 game that also produced two runs and an RBI.
The Beavers continue play at the Tucson Invitational Games March 16 with two games. BSU battles Minot State University at 12 p.m. and plays Jamestown College at 4 p.m.
