FAYETTE, Iowa (Robertson Woods Field) – The bats were silent and the gloves failed after a long layoff from games for the Bemidji State University baseball team Saturday, as the Beavers fell 2-0 (nine innings) and 18-5 (seven innings due to 10-run rule) to Upper Iowa University in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader.
Senior left-hander Phil Bray (Chatfield, Minn.) pitched well to give the Beavers a chance in game one. He allowed just five hits through eight, fanned eight batters and issued just two walks. Upper Iowa (12-13, 4-4 NSIC) broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the ninth with two runs on three hits off reliever Ryan Brezinski (Sr., RHP, Regina, Saskatchewan). BSU (12-16, 3-9 NSIC) left two runners on in the ninth, but failed to plate a run in the game. The Beavers totaled six hits and left six on the base paths.
In game two, big innings by the Peacocks doomed a split. UIU took a 2-0 lead through three innings, but a five-run fourth gave the Peacocks the 7-0 lead. BSU found its first run of the doubleheader in the bottom of the fourth on a senior outfielder Trevor Purvis (Rio Rancho, N.M.) single down the right field line that plated junior Zach Braun (C, Lakeville, Minn.) after he led-off with a double.
A seven-run sixth and four-run seventh by the Peacocks bumped the lead to 18-1 and would give Upper Iowa the 10-run rule victory. BSU added four more runs in the seventh, which included a senior shortstop Lewis Baumann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) two-RBI double to left.
Senior righty Ryan Anderson (Lino Lakes, Minn.) started and suffered the loss after allowing eight runs (just three earned) on five hits with five strikeouts.
The Beavers had four errors in game two after entering the doubleheader as one of the top five teams in the NSIC in fielding percentage. BSU posted 11 hits, all by 11 different players.
The two teams are scheduled to conclude the league series with a doubleheader Sunday at noon.
