ST. CLOUD, Minn. (Faber Field) – The Bemidji State University baseball team suffered its first loss of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament Friday, when nationally-ranked and No. 2 seed Minnesota State University, Mankato defeated the Beavers 2-1.

The loss sends the Beavers to an elimination game against St. Cloud State University Saturday at 11 a.m. at Faber Field. The game will be a re-match of the opening game of the tournament when the Beavers defeated the Huskies 9-3. The winner of the contest moves on to the championship game to play Minnesota State and beat them twice. The championship game is set for 3:30 p.m., if necessary, the second game against MSU will take place Sunday, May 12 at noon.

Senior Logan Kalis (OF/RHP, Little Falls, Minn.) went the distance for the Beavers on the mound to suffer the loss and move to 4-3. In eight innings he allowed just two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and zero walks.

Minnesota State drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning with back-to-back two out hits that plated a run. In the third, MSU manufactured another run on a sacrifice fly to left to make it a 2-0 contest.

The Beavers left four runners on base in the first three innings, which included a bases loaded, one out situation in the third, but couldn’t get a run across.

Finally in the fifth, senior shortstop Lewis Baumann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) got the Beavers on the board with a solo home run to straight away center. The run was the first allowed by Minnesota State in the Tournament and broke 32 consecutive shutout innings by the Mavericks.

Junior Chad Hanson (OF, St. Paul, Minn.) ripped a one out double to right center in the eighth to put a runner in scoring position, but the Beavers couldn’t find the big hit to tie the game and would fall 2-1.

BSU totaled five hits, three of which were for extra bases, as junior Zach Braun (C/1B, Lakeville, Minn.) added a double in the first inning. The Beavers left five runners on base, while the Mavericks also left five.

HISTORY NOTES: BSU’s 24 wins moves it past last year’s team for third most all time at BSU… The Beavers are now 6-10 in NSIC Tournament play all-time… Head coach Tim Bellew is 3-2 in NSIC Tournament play.
