BEMIDJI, Minn. – Coming off its second most wins in program history, the Bemidji State University baseball team will begin preparations for the 2014 season Monday, Jan. 13 with its first official practice. Ninth-year head coach Tim Bellew welcomes four starters, 11 letterwinners and 24 newcomers to this season’s squad.
The Beavers went 25-22 overall and 13-13 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play last season, while making a run to the NSIC Tournament Championship Game, aided by the play of 10 seniors. Bellew was named NSIC Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the regular season, while five players earned all-conference awards, which included Logan Kalis, who went on to earn All-America honors.
A lot of new faces make up the roster of the 2014 squad with 24 newcomers, but a solid group of 18 student-athletes from last season’s roster remain. Among the returning starters are captains Chad Hanson (Sr., OF, St. Paul, Minn.), Zach Braun (Sr., C, Lakeville, Minn.) and Joey Hanowski (So., INF/OF, Little Falls, Minn.). The top returner on the mound is senior Miles Campbell (RHP, Eden Prairie, Minn.).
The Beavers will practice in the John S. Glas Fieldhouse and Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center until getting outside on the BSU Baseball Field.
The Beavers will begin the season March 7-15 with a 10-game spring break trip to Tucson, Ariz. The NSIC slate is scheduled to begin on the road at Upper Iowa University March 29-30 with the first home contest set for April 9 versus Wayne State College.
