KANSAS CITY (Zarda Family Sports Complex) – The Bemidji State University baseball team snapped a six-game losing skid by defeating Avila University 10-3 Sunday in a nonconference contest. Junior Tyler Saeugling (RHP, Dubuque, Iowa) pitched nine complete innings and fanned eight batters for the win.
The Beavers (4-7) scored one in the first and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead. BSU added one in the fifth, then a five-run seventh broke open the game and the road team posted a 9-1 lead. The Beavers added one in the ninth, while the final two Avilia runs came in the bottom half of the final inning.
Saeugling went the distance for the Beavers to improve to 2-1. The junior scattered seven hits in the nine frames and issued only one walk.
The Beavers totaled 13 hits, guided by senior outfielder Chad Hanson (St. Paul, Minn.), who went 3-for-5 with two runs, an RBI and a homerun. Three other Bemidji State batters posted multi-hit games, which included a 2-for-5 effort from senior catcher Zach Braun (Lakeville, Minn.). He totaled three RBIs and scored one run.
The Beavers continue nonconference play March 24 when they battle Rockhurst University in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
