BISMARCK, N.D (Shiloh Christian Field) – Junior Dylan Webb (INF, Ahwatukee, Ariz.) lifted his first home run of the season over the left field fence to cap a five-run sixth inning by the Bemidji State University baseball team in game two of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at U-Mary Sunday. The big inning lifted the Beavers to an 8-7 victory and split of the twin bill, as Bemidji State lost game one 2-0.
The Beavers (9-10, 3-3 NSIC) outhit the Marauders (8-18, 3-7 NSIC) 7-6 in game one, but stranded eight runners on base. Junior right-hander Tyler Saeugling (Dubuque, Iowa) allowed a run in the first, while an unearned tally for the home team came across in the sixth and proved to be the only runs of the contest. Saeugling (2-3 in 2014) went the distance for the Beavers and allowed the one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts and just one walk.
Senior Zach Braun (C, Lakeville, Minn.) and freshman Logan Reidel (RHP/OF, Clarissa, Minn.) each went 2-for-3, while Braun recorded his third double of the season.
U-Mary scored first in game two with a run in the opening frame. BSU responded in the third with two runs, as senior outfielder Cole Bjorge (Prior Lake, Minn.) delivered a two-out double down the left field line that plated senior outfielder Chad Hanson (St. Paul, Minn.) and Braun.
The Marauders got one back in the bottom half to third to tie the contest 2-2. BSU regained the advantage with an unearned run in the fourth, as Jake Braun (Fr., INF, Lakeville, Minn.) scored on a single by sophomore Joey Hanowski (INF/OF, Little Falls, Minn.).
A four-run fifth by U-Mary opened up the contest, as the Marauders nabbed the 6-3 lead, but the Beaver bats continued to find the ball on the barrel, as BSU scored five runs in the sixth to secure an 8-6 lead. The inning started with four straight hits, while the fourth came off the bat of Z. Braun and scored sophomore Tyler Nelson (INF, Hayfield, Minn.). A one-out single by freshman Bo Schmitz (C/OF, St. Cloud, Minn.) allowed Hanowski to stroll across home plate to cut the deficit to one at 6-5. Webb then came up and swung the big stick, launching a three-run home run to give the Beavers an 8-6 lead.
U-Mary was gifted an unearned run in the seventh to cut the BSU in half and trail 8-7, but that would be the end of the scoring in game two, as the Beavers would secure their third straight league split.
Redshirt-freshman righty Mark Kosmalski (Oakdale, Minn.) started for the Beavers and went four innings, as he allowed six earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Lefty Nate Heisick (So., Plymouth, Minn.) relieved Kosmalski to make his team-high eighth appearance. He hurled 4.2 innings and gained the victory to improve to 3-2. He allowed one run (unearned) on three hits with five strikeouts and a single free pass. Junior Drake Huggans (Greenley, Colo) came in to get the final out and did so with a strikeout to record his fourth save of the season.
Webb finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored. Hanson also totaled three hits, as he went 3-for-6 to help guide the Beavers to a season-high 16 hits. Three BSU batters recorded two hits. Hanowski went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, Schmitz posted a 2-for-5 contest with one RBI and one run, while Riedel went 2-for-4.
The Beavers are scheduled to complete the league four-game series at U-Mary Monday with a doubleheader slated to begin at 2 p.m.
