CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Bemidji State University baseball team went on the road Wednesday for midweek Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) doubleheader against Highway 2 rival University of Minnesota Crookston. The Beavers earned the sweep over the Golden Eagles by scores of 12-5 and 4-3.
In game one, the Beavers jumped out to a 9-0 edge over the Golden Eagles before UMC was able to make it a 9-2 game in the bottom of the second. Bemidji State’s scoring got started in the first putting up five runs on five hits and two Minnesota Crookston errors. Tyler Nelson and Joey Hanowski leading off the inning hit back-to-back singles and then again by Terry Hadden and Dylan Webb to highlight the inning.
BSU continued moving its lead with a double by Scott Litchy in the second followed up with a home run by Terry Hadden, which is his first of the season for a 9-0 run. Minnesota Crookston was able to sneak past two runs on BSU, including a RBI triple.
Bemidji State added two runs in the third making it an 11-2 game before the Golden Eagles would put up two off an error by the Beavers for an 11-4 game. BSU would seal the win with one run in the sixth despite UMC getting one in the seventh to make it a 12-5 final.
Michael Herd was on the mound for the Beavers, earning the win to move his record to 1-2 on the season. Herd pitched 4.1 innings, allowing only five hits. Jesse Katz saw 2.2 innings of work to give up two hits.
With the win in game one, head coach Tim Bellew earned his 100th win in the NSIC.
In game two, BSU would start the scoring in the second when the Beavers got to UMC’s Trevor Buttermore. Mason Bellew singled to left field to drive in Terry Hadden. Joey Hanowski would then come through with a clutch double to clear the bases and drive in Tyler Nelson, Jake Tuholsky and Bellew.
UMC would get one run back in the second as Zach Frazier singled to drive in Colton Haight.
The Golden Eagles would add two more in the fourth. Patrick Higgins doubled to left field for a one, while Jesse Jennings then came through with a single to get the final run for UMC.
Logan Riedel would get the BSU win after going six innings and allowing three earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.
Terry Hadden would pick up the save for the Beavers, going two innings and shutting down UMC.
Bemidji State, now 10-19, 7-7 NSIC, will be back in action April 11-12 for a four game stint as it plays host to Minnesota State University, Mankato. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. both days from BSU Baseball Field. The Golden Eagles are now 8-24 overall and 2-14 in the NSIC.
