No. 7 Minnesota State earns the sweep as Beavers drop twin bill

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State baseball ended a four-game series against Minnesota State University, Mankato at home Sunday as the Beavers drop the twin bill to the Mavericks by scores of 14-4 and 23-1.

Bemidji State, now 10-23, 7-11 NSIC, will be back at BSU Baseball Field April 15 for a midweek NSIC matchup against Minot State University before going on the road for eight straight. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Bemidji, Minn. The Mavericks push to a 23-4 overall and a 13-3 mark in the NSIC with the sweep.

Bemidji State Highlights

  • Collin Eckman paced the Beavers offense in both games as he went 2-for-3 in both games. Eckman added one RBI in the doubleheader as well.
  • Also going 2-for-3 in game two was Scott Litchy, which included a triple for a leadoff hit in the fourth inning.
  • Joey Hanowski (3), Bo Schmitz (2) and Logan Riedel (2) were the other three Beavers to post multiple hits in the twin bill Sunday against the Mavericks.
  • Hanowski led the team in RBI with two in game one after a double in the fifth inning.
  • In game one, Collin Rutledge was the starter and pitcher of record for BSU with three innings of work, while Michael Herd saw four innings and struck out three to finish the game.
  • Jack Hegarty pitched 5.1 innings on the mound in game two moving his record to 2-3 on the year and struck out three. Jack Stigman and Derek Dorau put in time on the mound as well.
  • The Beavers only committed one error in the doubleheader. 

Minnesota State Highlights

  • Taylor Branstad led MSU in game one, finishing 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored at the plate. Josh Wenzel, Luke Waldek, Dylan Dresel and senior Kevin Kramer each finished with two hits apiece.
  • Freshman Brody Rodning pitched all seven innings allowing four earned runs and nine hits while striking out four and walking just two for the win. Rodning is now 5-0 on the year.
  • Max Waletich finished 4-for-6 with three home runs and five RBI in game two, while Waldek went 3-for-5 with a grand slam and seven RBI.
  • Freshman Dalton Roach picked up the win for game two after pitching six innings and allowing just six hits and one earned run. Roach improves his record to 3-1.
  • The Mavericks had 39 hits, including 10 home runs and committed just one error in the field in the doubleheader.
  • Waletich led Minnesota State’s 10 home runs in the doubleheader as he recorded three. Connor McCallum, Hunter Harnisch, Waldek, Kevin Kramer, Nolan Johnson and Branstad were also in on the home run action for the Mavericks.
