Baseball swept by Augie despite solid starting pitcher outings

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Ronken Field) -- The Bemidji State University baseball team stayed within reach of Augustana University Saturday afternoon during game one of a doubleheader before a solid outing by senior starting pitcher Jack Stigman in game two. BSU (3-9) was swept, 4-1 in game one and 9-1 in game two, while Stigman tied a career high nine strikeouts in the second game of the four-game series.

Game One

Senior Ryan Rumpca put a ball in play in the top of the first inning that would lead to the first run of the day. He advanced to third on the play after a throwing error at first base. Senior Duane Miller grounded out during the next at-bat that allowed Rumpca to score and give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. Augie kept BSU off the scoreboard the rest of the game while adding two runs in each of the first and sixth innings. Patrick O’Donnell knocked out a two-run homer in the first inning. O’Donnell later scored in the sixth inning off a single while Riley Johnson also crossed home on a throwing error. Both Augie runs in the sixth were unearned.

Senior starting pitcher Terry Hadden (0-2) was credited with the loss after throwing 4.2 innings with four strikeouts while allowing two earned runs and eight hits. Senior pitcher Luke Benge closed the final 1.1 innings on the mound with no earned runs and two hits allowed. Augustana starting pitcher Jacob Blank earned the win (4-0) after throwing 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts and allowing two hits and no earned runs. Collin Lovell recorded his third save of the season with one strikeout in the seventh inning.

Game Two

The Beavers were no-hit through 7.1 innings of play before freshman Noah Boser hit a double to right field. Augustana took advantage with an RBI double in the first inning, a two-run home run in the fourth and six runs in the sixth.

Stigman (0-2) took the loss in game two despite tying a career high nine strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched. Vikings pitcher Michael Brandt (1-1) went 5.0 innings with six strikeouts and no hits allowed to earn the win. Four pitchers combined for the two hitter.
