BEMIDJI, Minn. Litchy hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh of game one while he and senior outfielder/pitcher Logan Riedel totaled three RBIs each in game two for BSU (9-15, 6-6 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference).
Bemidji State and Sioux Falls traded leads through the first four innings of game one, as USF scored first in the first inning on an RBI single up the middle and BSU followed with two runs in the second. The Cougars scored six runs in the fourth inning on a two-RBI single and grand slam to take a 7-2 lead. Junior Kai Haake singled through the left side for his third RBI of the season before senior Collin Eckman stole home to cut the deficit to 7-4.
After USF added one run in the fifth, Litchy sparked a five-run inning for the Beavers with a two-RBI single to drive in seniors Ben Boser and Matt Mastantuono. Sophomore Gunner Olszewski advanced to third on Litchy’s hit and was brought home on a wild pitch. Riedel singled through the right side to drive in Litchy and Eckman doubled deep to right field to score Riedel and give BSU a 9-8 lead. USF tied the game with one run in the top of the seventh but Litchy knocked out his fourth home run of the season in walk-off fashion to give BSU the 11-9 win.
Riedel (1-2) took the win after finishing the final out of the seventh inning while senior Luke Benge set him up with 1.2 innings pitched with no hits and no earned runs allowed. Cougars pitcher Mitchell Lyall (0-1) pitched two outs into the seventh before giving up the game-winning home run to earn the loss.
The Beavers continued their hot hitting in the beginning of game two with three two-out singles in the first inning, including a two-RBI knock through the left side by Riedel, to take a 2-0 lead. Both teams added one run in the fourth inning before USF tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth.
Litchy smacked his second home run of the day in the bottom of the fifth to add two runs and retake the lead, 5-3, for Bemidji State. Riedel found the gap in right center field for his second hit of the day and an RBI, also in the fifth, while Olszewski and Litchy each added one RBI in the sixth to build BSU’s lead to 8-3. USF threatened in the top of the seventh after loading the bases with one out but could only score one run to cut BSU’s lead to 8-4.
