Saturday wins secure Beavers sweep over Mustangs

MARSHALL, Minn. (Alumni Field) -- Upperclassmen Collin Eckman and Scott Litchy each totaled at least three RBIs Saturday to help the Bemidji State University baseball program to complete a sweep over Southwest Minnesota State University at Alumni Field in Marshall, Minn. BSU (17-29, 14-20 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) went on for 7-1 and 7-6 wins over SMSU (13-31, 8-26 NSIC) to head into the final week of the regular season.

Game One
Bemidji State built a 7-0 lead through the first five innings, beginning with an RBI double by senior Logan Riedel in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Mason Bellew began a five-run fourth inning for the Beavers by scoring on a wild pitch before senior Collin Eckman added an RBI single and junior Scott Litchy capped the inning with his second home run in as many days, a three-run shot to right center field, to put BSU up, 6-0. Senior Matt Mastantuono put the ball in play to force an error in the fifth inning and bring in Bellew for BSU’s 7-0 lead.

BSU starting pitcher Ryan Fransen (4-2) now leads the team in wins after throwing a complete game with one earned run allowed on four hits with three strikeouts. SMSU pitcher Erik Thorvilson (0-5) took the loss after going 4.0 innings with five earned runs allowed on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Game Two
SMSU crossed the first run of game two in the second inning before senior Ryan Rumpca drove in the game-tying run on an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the second. The Mustangs again took the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth but the Beavers scored five runs in the bottom half to take their first lead of the game. Freshman Isaiah Grancorvitz led off four straight two-out hits for BSU with an RBI single past the shortstop while Boser tied the game at 3-3 with a two-RBI double to left center field. Eckman put BSU on top of SMSU with a two-RBI single to center field followed by an RBI single by Litchy to left field, his eighth RBI in the series against the Mustangs, to give BSU a 6-3 lead.

After the Mustangs put up one run in the top of the fifth, Litchy reached base on a two-out single up the middle followed by an RBI single to left field by sophomore Gunner Olszewski to put BSU up, 7-4. The Mustangs added two runs in the eighth inning but junior Connor McNallan entered for the save to close out the win for the Beavers.

BSU pitcher Alec Meyer (1-3) earned the win after throwing 2.2 innings with one earned run allowed on two hits with two strikeouts. McNallan (3) finished the final 1.1 innings with no runs allowed to earned the save for BSU. SMSU pitcher Jeremy Stouffer (1-2) was credited with the loss after giving up six earned runs on five hits in 3.2 innings with two strikeouts.

Bemidji State closes out the 2017 regular season with a home-and-home series Thursday, May 4 and Saturday, May 6 against St. Cloud State University. The Beavers travel to St. Cloud, Minn., May 4 before hosting the Huskies at BSU Baseball Field May 6 with each set of games beginning at 4 p.m.
