Beaver Baseball season-opener stifled by losses to Bulldogs at US Bank

MINNEAPOLIS (US Bank Stadium) -- The Bemidji State University baseball program was sent away with two losses to open the 2018 season after 13-0 and 4-2 decisions against University of Minnesota Duluth Thursday night at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The non-conference games move the Beavers to an overall record of 0-2 while the Bulldogs improve to 2-0 to begin the season.

Bemidji State was only able to total four hits in each game and fell into a deficit early into game one. The Bulldogs opened the game with a double and walk that would provide a two-run lead after the first frame. UMD added to the lead in the third and fourth innings with a combined nine runs to take an 11-0 lead. The final two insurance runs by Minnesota Duluth were added in the seventh inning.

Sophomore Isaiah Grancorvitz finished with two of BSU’s four hits in the game, reaching base on two singles in the second and seventh innings. Sophomore Alec Meyer started on the bump for the Beavers and went through 2.2 innings of work. Junior Ben Bauer and freshman Travis Carruth pitched in relief, as Bauer went one inning and Carruth went 3.1.

The Beavers struck the scoreboard first in game two as freshman Wyatt White took advantage of a Bulldogs’ error earlier in the third inning to drive in an RBI and put BSU ahead, 1-0. UMD took its first lead of the game after the bottom of the fifth inning as a three-run home run followed a bases-loaded walk in the fourth for the Bulldogs’ only runs of the game. Junior Gunner Olszewski reached base in the sixth inning before stealing both second and third base. He set up Grancorvitz with a sacrifice fly that brought BSU to within two runs, 4-2, but the Beavers were sent down on the next four batters.

Senior pitcher Connor McNallan made the start in game two and went 4.1 innings with five strikeouts for the Beavers. Junior Jesse Palafox threw in relief for 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

Bemidji State returns to US Bank Stadium Thursday, March 8 to take on Upper Iowa University on the front-end of the program’s 2018 spring trip. The Beavers and Peacocks play for the second time in as many seasons at US Bank Stadium with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 9 p.m.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
