Beavers catch fire in two innings of 13-5 win against Saints

ST. LOUIS (Weber Field) -- Bemidji State University baseball used two big innings and a couple insurance runs Monday afternoon to help in a 13-5 win at Maryville University in St. Louis. The Beavers (2-6) split with the Saints (8-9) in the doubleheader after a 16-2 loss but were led by sophomore Isaiah Grancorvitz with four RBIs in the doubleheader-opening win.

Game One – W, 13-5
The Beaver bats caught fire early behind a bases-loaded triple by Grancorvitz that was set up by a lead-off double by freshman Bryce Norby and back-to-back walks by sophomore Drake Wawro and senior Scott Litchy. Sophomore Noah Boser followed the triple with an RBI ground out to give BSU a 4-0 lead after the first frame.

BSU got hot again in the third inning with six hits that led to seven runs and a 11-0 lead. Senior Connor McNallan brought in the first runs of the inning with a two-RBI single to center field while junior Josiah Julagay hit a bases-loaded single for the third run of the third. Norby followed with his second double of the day to clear the bases and Litchy brought in the final run of the inning in his second time batting in the third with a fielder’s choice.

Sophomore pitcher Jake Olson was able to hold off a late spark by the Saints, as they scored one run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth. BSU offset the two runs in the sixth with two in the seventh off an RBI double by Litchy and a sacrifice fly by Grancorvitz.

Olson (1-0) took the win for BSU after going 6.0 innings with three earned runs allowed on nine hits with two strikeouts. The Beavers totaled five extra-base hits led by Norby with two doubles. Norby went 2-for-5 from the plate with three RBIs, while Grancorvitz went 2-for-2 with four RBIs, two runs scored and a triple.

Game Two – L, 16-2
The Saints used consistency to overtake the Beavers in game two, scoring a run in every inning except the eighth and ninth frames. By the fourth inning when BSU scored for the first time, MU built a 7-0 lead. Norby singled to right field with the bases loaded to put the Beavers on the scoreboard with two runs. The Saints continued to pull away thereafter with nine runs after the fourth inning.

Freshman Eric Maas (0-1) took the loss in game two after throwing 1.2 innings. Litchy, Norby and freshman Parker Borg each combined for BSU’s three hits, all coming as singles.

Bemidji State continues its road trip Tuesday, March 13 with a two-game series at University of Illinois-Springfield. The Beavers and Prairie Stars play a nine-inning contest Tuesday followed by another Wednesday at UIS Baseball Field in Springfield, Ill.
