Late runs spoil Litchy two home run game in sweep to UMC

CROOKSTON, Minn. (UMC Baseball Field) -- Senior Scott Litchy found his stroke during the Bemidji State University baseball program’s final game of its four-game series at University of Minnesota Crookston Sunday in Crookston, Minn. Litchy finished the last game of the day 3-for-4 from the plate with two home runs despite a second Beavers’ (4-22, 2-8 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) loss on the day to the Golden Eagles.

Game One – L, 6-2
A leadoff double, hit by pitch and walk allowed the Golden Eagles to set up the go-ahead run in the bottom of the first, as the run crossed off a bases loaded walk by the Beavers. BSU put a runner in scoring position in the top of the second but couldn’t bring them home to tie the game. UMC followed in the bottom half with five runs, four being recorded as unearned due to errors.

After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third, Bemidji State found its way around the bases to cut into the Minnesota Crookston lead. Back-to-back walks and an error allowed sophomore Isaiah Grancorvitz to score from second base. A wild pitch on the ensuing batter brought in freshman Caleb Carlson from third to bring the UMC lead to 6-2.

The Beavers only put two runners in scoring position the rest of the game and finished with three hits on the day. Freshman Blake Huntley, sophomore Drake Wawro and senior Bazil Zuehlke were each responsible for one of the team’s three hits. Junior Tommy Geisenhof threw 4.1 innings with a career-high five strikeouts, allowing just two hits.

Game Two – L, 6-5
Litchy found his swing during the top of the third inning while knocking out his second home run of the season. He followed up in the fifth inning with an RBI single to score sophomore Drake Wawro from second base. After Grancorvitz drew a walk, sophomore Noah Boser brought in two additional runs on a two-RBI triple for a 4-1 lead.

Litchy’s final at-bat of the day ended with the same result as the first, a solo home run to give BSU a one-run lead. His third RBI hit of the day gave the Beavers a 5-4 lead before the Golden Eagles scored on a bases loaded balk call and a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Five Beavers were responsible for hits today, led by Litchy who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, three runs scored and two home runs. Freshman Jackson Back started the game and went 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and seven hits allowed.

Bemidji State returns to Crookston, Minn., Monday at 1:30 p.m. to face Minnesota State University Mankato in a neutral site game due to weather conditions. The Beavers and Mavericks will play in a doubleheader at UMC Baseball Field.
