BISMARCK, N.D. (Bismarck Municipal Ballpark) -- The Bemidji State University baseball team was swept Wednesday afternoon in a doubleheader at University of Mary, 4-0 and 8-1, in Bismarck, N.D. The Beavers fall to 6-30 overall and 5-19 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Game One – L, 4-0
U-Mary got the early start in game one after sending the BSU side down in order while bringing in three runs on two hits and one Beaver error. The Marauders put its first four batters on base by a walk, two singles, and an error to drive in two runs before a sacrifice fly added the third of the inning.
Sophomore Matt Kummet led off the top of the second inning with BSU’s first hit followed by a double by senior Drake Wawro to put two runners on, but both were left on base in BSU’s first scoring chance. Sophomore pitcher Kenny Morris entered to pitch in the second inning and retired 12 of 13 batters faced, including a career-high seven strikeouts to help keep BSU within reach heading into the sixth inning. U-Mary added one insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning and sent the BSU side down in order to end the game.
Morris finished throwing 4.0 innings with one hit and no runs allowed while freshman pitcher Kevin Smith (0-3) was credited with the loss after pitching the first frame with three earned runs allowed. Wawro led the BSU battery with two hits in three at-bats, including one double, while sophomore Owen Anderson also recorded a double.
Game Two – L, 8-1
The Marauders again used two innings to build its lead in game two while scoring seven of its eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Beavers began the game with a leadoff single by sophomore Blake Huntley which ended as one of just two runners stranded through the first six frames.
After U-Mary had built a 7-0 lead, Junior Isaiah Grancorvitz led-off the seventh inning with a single that was one of three straight to put BSU on the scoreboard. Sophomore Parker Borg was the final of the three singles and brought in Grancorvitz on his seventh RBI of the season.
Freshman pitcher Zack Henderson (0-2) took the loss despite allowing just two hits through 4.0 innings of work but allowed all four of his earned runs in the fifth. Huntley and Kummet led BSU with two hits each, while Borg and Grancorvitz accounted for the other two BSU hits.
Bemidji State returns home to host University of Minnesota Crookston during its final home weekend. The Beavers and Golden Eagles open the weekend at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader Saturday, April 27 followed by senior day at 12 p.m. with a doubleheader, one game of which is an NSIC contest, Sunday, April 28.
