After a successful four-year playing career on the Bemidji State University baseball team, Matt Ellinghuysen enters his third season serving as assistant coach for the Beaver baseball program in 2016. Ellinghuysen played from 2010-13 under 11th-year head coach Tim Bellew.

“Matt has been with our program for the last four years and has always been hard working,” Bellew said. “He is a grinder and has the drive to make sure things get done. That is how he was as a player and I think he brings that as a coach. When it comes to mental preparation, how to approach the game and how help your team win, Matt brings a lot to the table.”

“When the position opened up and Tim gave me the offer I accepted right away,” Ellinghuysen said. “I’ve spent a lot of time in the program, I know how it runs and I feel that it is an honor to continue what I’ve learned and pass it on to the current players, especially with how young our roster is. I wanted to help continue the Bemidji State baseball tradition and how we play the game.”

Ellinghuysen will serve as head recruiting coordinator and have responsibilities with all facets of the program.

Ellinghuysen, a St. Charles, Minn. native, played third base for Bemidji State from 2010-13. In 124 games (113 starts) at third for the Beavers, Ellinghuysen was a career .283 hitter and compiled 100 hits, 58 RBIs and 30 runs scored. In the field he totaled 149 assists with 64 putouts.

His most productive season at the plate came his senior season when he started 47 games and batted .333 with 49 hits, 31 runs, 30 RBIs and 10 doubles. He was hit by a pitch more than any other player in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (24) and owned a .438 on-base percentage to rank 15th in the NSIC.

During Ellinghuysen’s career, the Beavers compiled an 82-115 record.

Ellinghuysen graduated from BSU in May 2013 with a degree in sport management and a minor in mass communications.
