BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s
Lindsey Weyer (OH, 5-9, Sr., Loyal, Wis.) and
Rob Wills (DE, 6-3, 262, Sr., Roseville, Minn.) have been selected as Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after posting outstanding athletic accomplishments between Aug. 23- Sept. 4.
Weyer finished the opening weekend of play hitting .450 in four matches with 65 kills (4.33 kills/game) and 49 digs (3.27 digs/game), posting three double-doubles (kills and digs) at the Blue Hawk Tournament in Dickinson, N.D. Weyer’s 25 kills in the opening match of the season against Montana State University-Northern ties for fourth place in a single match at BSU since 2001. The Loyal, Wis. native hit .525 against the Skylights and .583 (16 kills) against Dickinson State on Saturday. Her .583 hitting percentage against Dickinson State ranks fifth on BSU’s single match list.
Weyer is coming off a junior season where she had only five kills in 51 games played. Her kill total of 25 to open the season, shattered her previous career high of 11 set versus Huntington in 2008. Weyer also had a career-high 17 digs against Dickinson State.
This marks the first time Beavers Pride has recognized Weyer as one of its athletes of the week.
Wills started the 2010 season with nine tackles in a 24-7 win at Minot State Aug. 26. Five of his nine tackles came unassisted, with two tackles counting as quarterback sacks for a loss of 13 yards. He totaled four tackles for a loss that pushed the Beaver offense back 20 yards. Wills also added a pass break-up. He established career-highs in solo tackles (5), sacks (2) and tackles for loss (4), while tying a career mark in total tackles (9). Wills led a defensive unit that didn’t allow a single point, holding Minot State to only four first downs and a total of just 86 yards, including -10 rushing.
This week’s honor also marks the first time Wills have been selected as a Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week.
The BSU football team, now 1-0 overall, open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play Saturday (Sept. 11) when it hosts Augustana College in the 1 p.m. 2010 home opener.
Weyer and the Bemidji State volleyball team, 3-1 after the first week of play, return to action this weekend as they travel to Moorhead, Minn. to participate in the Dragon Classic where the team will face Northern State University, Minot State, Adelphia (N.Y.) and the University of Sioux Falls.
