For the fourth consecutive season, the Bemidji State University football program is represented with a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division Preseason Player of the Year as the 2019 Preseason Coaches’ Poll was released. Junior linebacker Gabe Ames was voted the 2019 NSIC North Division Defensive Preseason Player of the Year, the third straight season a Beaver was selected to the honor, while the team was voted to finish fifth overall and second in the NSIC North Division.

Seven individuals, team to be inducted into Bemidji State Athletic Hall of Fame

Former Bemidji State student-athletes Denis Lemieux (men’s hockey 1968-72), Len Rothlisberger (men’s swimming 1968-72), Rich Schwartz (football 1981-85), Karen (Morrissey) Stellrecht (women’s basketball 1993-97) and Andrea (Block) Zenner (softball 1998-2001) will be inducted into the Alumni B Club Athletic Hall of Fame Feb. 16. Bisch introduced as Beaver Football defensive coordinator

Bemidji State University football head coach Brent Bolte announced today the hiring of Jamie Bisch as the Beavers’ defensive coordinator for the 2018 season. Bisch comes to BSU after serving at Midland University for two seasons in the same position.

Senior wide receiver Vince Dinkel made two key plays late in the fourth quarter for the Bemidji State University football team, but a missed extra point following a 17-yard touchdown reception by Dinkel proved the difference in Saturday's 42-41 loss to Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Beavers (7-3, 4-2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division) executed a successful hook-and-ladder play on fourth and 37 to set up Dinkel touchdown grab with 39 seconds to go.


Adams, Elbe named to Academic All-District First Team

Bemidji State University football seniors Gena Adams and Mitchell Elbe were named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District III First Team for their performances on the field and in the classroom. “The Battle Axe” traveling trophy rivalry between the Bemidji State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead football programs is renewed for the 69th time in the trophy series as both teams meet Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. from Chet Anderson Stadium. The Bemidji State University football team will report for training camp Wednesday, officially marking the start of the Beavers’ 89th season of collegiate football.


Leonhardt and Raiders drop NFL preseason opener to Vikings, 10-6

Former Beaver Brian Leonhardt made his return to Minnesota Friday as a member of the Oakland Raiders. The second-year tight end grabbed one pass reception and saw significant playing time early, but the Raiders offense sputtered and lost the 2014 preseason opener to the Minnesota Vikings, 10-6, in Minneapolis.


BSU Football picked third in the division; Eighth overall

The Bemidji State football team has been picked to finished third in the NSIC’s North Division and eighth overall in the 2014 NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. In addition, BSU sophomore wide receiver and return specialist Juwaan Richard (Schaumberg, Ill.) and senior safety Scott Christensen (Stockbridge, Ga.) were recognized as preseason players to watch.


Former Beaver Leonhardt comes home for 2014 NFL preseason opener

The beginning of the NFL season is an exciting time for many, but for one Bemidji State University graduate in particular, the 2014 preseason opener marks a special homecoming. Former BSU tight end Brian Leonhardt (2009-12) will travel with the team when the Raiders open the preseason versus the Minnesota Vikings Friday at TCF Bank Stadium.


Beaver football single-game and multi-game ticket options on sale Aug. 1

The Bemidji State University Department of Athletics has announced 2014 Beaver football single-game and multi-game ticket options will go on sale beginning Aug. 1 at 10 a.m. BSU, along with the Sanford Center Bob Lowth Ford Pickup Window have partnered for advance sale ticket specials for all home games.


Christensen, Kiebler and Reinke honored as pre-season All-Americans

USA Football Network, Inc. has announced its 26th USA College Football Division II Pre-Season All-American Teams and in the process gave a nod to Bemidji State University football seniors Scott Christensen (DB, Stockbridge, Ga.), Dan Kiebler (DL, Franklin Park, Ill.) and J.J. Reinke (DL, New Prague, Minn.).


B-Club 2015 Athletics Hall of Fame class announced

Bemidji State University will induct six individuals and one outstanding team into its Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, as part of the University’s B-Club/Athletic Hall of Fame Weekend.


Wick, former Bemidji State football defensive tackle, earns tryout with CFL

A 2009 All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference First Team Defense selection, former Bemidji State defensive tackle Bryan Wick has been keeping his professional football dream alive since graduating in 2009. Halfway through his fifth season of arena football, Wick earned an invitation to attend Rookie Mini-Camp with the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) Montreal Alouettes.

The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced April 29 its members of the 2014 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which includes Bemidji State University football student-athletes Tyler Abrahamson (OL, New Brighton, Minn.) and Buckley Wright (OLB, Sioux City, Iowa).


2014 Green and White Spring Game canceled due to snow

Due to a large amount of snowfall in Bemidji Thursday afternoon and early evening, the 2014 Bemidji State University Football Green and White Spring Game was canceled. For the first time under the direction of 18-year head coach Jeff Tesch, the Beavers will miss out on the 15th and final practice of the spring ball season.


Today’s Youth Football Clinic moved indoors

The Bemidji State football team is set to host a Youth Football Clinic today before concluding its spring practice with its annual Green and White Spring Game. Due to weather conditions, the clinic has been moved indoors to the Gillett Fitness/Recreation Center and is open to all kids currently in grades K-6. Registration begins at 4 p.m., with the clinic starting at 5 p.m.


VanHaaften and Wright honored by NSIC

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) today announced Bemidji State University’s Tiffany VanHaaften (Sr., Chaska, Minn.) and Buckley Wright (Sr., SIoux City, Iowa) to its list of 2014 Honor Student-Athlete and scholarship award winners.


Bemidji State football calls on Beaver Nation to support one of its own

To help support one of its own, the Bemidji State University football program is encouraging fans to partake in a free-will offering at the Green and White Spring Game April 24 to benefit the family of freshman Jake Krause (OL, Wadena, Minn.), who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in October. The annual spring game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Chet Anderson Stadium.


Green & White event raises more than $104,000 for BSU Athletics

More than 400 attendees and 100 Bemidji State University student-athletes gathered at the Sanford Center Saturday night for the inaugural Green & White Dinner and Auction to Benefit BSU Athletics. Net proceeds from tickets, bids on auction items, as well as other activities, totaled more than $104,000 and included individual donations totaling $21,800 to “Build a Scholarship.”


Bemidji State football releases 2014 schedule

The Bemidji State University football team will host six games in 2014, which includes two home contests under the lights at Chet Anderson Stadium. All 11 contests will serve as Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games, starting with a battle at Wayne State College Sept. 6.

Bemidji State football adds two for 2014

The Bemidji State University football program added two more signees to its 2014 class Wednesday, announcing the addition of Aaron Alexander (DB, Dunwoody, Ga.) and Steele Berg (DB, Plymouth, Minn.). The Beavers’ 2014 signee class is now 26 after inking 24 student-athletes Feb. 5.

Football year-in-review

The Bemidji State University football team won its first and last games of the year and picked up a homecoming victory for the 11th time in the last 15 years, but the three wins would prove to be the only of 2013. The Beavers finished the season 3-8 overall and 1-6 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North play, their worst record since 1997 - the second season of head coach Jeff Tesch's career.


Pulkinen named Don Hansen All-America Honorable Mention

Bemidji State University senior Zach Pulkinen (K/P, Minot, N.D.) earned his third All-America nod of 2013 Tuesday, when he was honored as a Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America Honorable Mention Team member.

For the second time in three days, Bemidji State University senior punter Zach Pulkinen (Minot, N.D.) has been honored as an All-American. Thursday, Pulkinen was named Associated Press (AP) Little All-America Second Team. Pulkinen becomes the second BSU student-athlete to earn All-American status from the organization.

The American Football Coaches Association announced its 2013 All-America Team Tuesday and in the process honored Bemidji State senior Zach Pulkinen (K/P, Minot, N.D.) as a 2013 AFCA Division II Coaches’ All-America Specialists Team member for his exceptional punting abilities. Pulkinen becomes the first BSU student-athlete to earn All-American status from the association.


Pulkinen and Walker named Don Hansen All-Super Region Three

Bemidji State University seniors Zach Pulkinen (K/P, Minot, N.D.) and Avery Walker (RB, Milwaukee, Wis.) were named Don Hansen All-Super Region Three, in an announcement by the Don Hansen Football Committee Dec. 13. Pulkinen was named second team defense, while Walker earned third team offense honors.


Pulkinen honored as Daktronics Super Region #3 First Team

Bemidji State University senior Zach Pulkinen (K/P, Minot, N.D.) was named Daktronics Super Region #3 First Team Defense, in an announcement Thursday, for his exceptional punting abilities in 2013. The senior became the seventh BSU student-athlete to earn first team honors from the organization, while he is the 16th to be named all-region by Daktronics since 2000.


Beavers dole out 2013 team awards

The Bemidji State University football team doled out its annual team awards Nov. 21. Senior Avery Walker (RB, Milwaukee, Wis.) was named Bemidji State’s Offensive Player of the Year, while junior Scott Christensen (S, Stockbridge, Ga.) was awarded Defensive Player of the Year and senior Zach Pulkinen (K/P, Minot, N.D.) was honored as Special Teams Player of the Year. Trailing 27-3 at the half and missing its starting quarterback, the Bemidji State football seemed doomed for a season-opening loss at the hands of Winona State. A determined BSU defense stepped up in the fourth quarter and turned the tides with to set-up a two-minute drill score, which led to an overtime touchdown for the 34-27 victory at WSU to begin 2013 and the NSIC seasons.

Despite being inside, the Bemidji State football team made the best of its first spring practice of 2013, as the squad gathered for the first time at the Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center Saturday. The Beavers conducted their first of 15 spring practices indoors due to snow still on the ground in Bemidji.


Green and White Spring Game and Youth Clinic set for April 25

The Bemidji State football team will host a Youth Football Clinic Thursday, April 25 at Chet Anderson Stadium before concluding spring practice with the annual Green and White Spring Game. The camp is open to all kids currently in grades K-6 and is $15 per participant. Clinic registration begins at 4 p.m., the clinic will start at 5 p.m. and the spring game will follow at 7 p.m.

The start to spring practice has been delayed due to weather conditions in Bemidji and will likely force the team to start indoors. Bemidji State season in review

The Bemidji State University football team returned 16 starters from the 2011, 8-3 team and had high expectations for the 2012 season. The squad definitely didn’t expect to be sitting 1-3 four games into the season. But that is what the Beavers’ record was heading into Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North play. Sixty-four times the teams have met on the gridiron to stake claim to a traveling trophy called The Battle Axe – an ancient weapon from New Guinea. Wayne State College lifted a 42-yard field goal through the uprights with 35 seconds to play to edge the Bemidji State University football team, 20-17, Saturday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contest at Chet Anderson Stadium in Bemidji, Minn. Turnovers punished the Beavers for the second consecutive game, as five giveaways led to 17 Wildcat points.

Rongstad tabbed NSIC Offensive Player of the Week

BSU senior Lance Rongstad (QB, Eleva, Wis.) was named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday after guiding the Beavers to a 2012 season opening victory Aug. 31. The senior captain threw for 228 yards and a career-high four touchdowns to lead BSU to a 25-23 home victory against Upper Iowa University and become the first BSU NSIC Offensive Player of the Week since 2006.

USA College Football, Inc. announced its 20th Annual Division II Preseason All-American and Central Region All-Star Teams Monday. Senior Beau Wakefield (WR, Butternut, Wis.) (second team All-America as a return specialist) and senior Brian Leonhardt (TE, Blaine, Minn.) (third team All-America offense) led a list of six BSU student-athletes on the Central Region All-Star Team.


Bemidji State Football Camp: Check-in Day

About 105 Bemidji State University football student-athletes reported to camp for the 2012 season Friday. The players conducted paperwork and got their equipment, as testing and the first practice begins Saturday.


Bemidji State football tabbed sixth in NSIC Coaches' Poll

The Bemidji State University football team closed the 2011 season with an 8-3 overall and 7-3 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record to finish tied for fourth in the league standings. Tuesday, the coaches of the NSIC pegged the Beavers sixth in the 2012 NSIC Coaches' Poll. BSU was slotted third in the NSIC North.


Bemidji State football begins training camp Aug. 10

Three BSU football student-athletes honored with academic award

The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced today the members of the 2012 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which includes Bemidji State University football senior student-athletes Josh Beste (DL, East Grand Forks, Minn.), Brody Scheff (S, Waconia, Minn.) and Dusty Sluzewicz (S, Homer Glen, Ill.).


Bemidji State and Northwest Technical College collaborate on renovation

Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College have combined forces for a collaborative renovation project. Students in the NTC construction program are gaining practical experience and course credit for designing and building 123 wood lockers in a major redesign of the BSU football and volleyball programs' locker room.


Wicked White downs Gang Green 49-25 in Green/White Spring Game

The Wicked White offense prevailed 49-25 against the Gang Green defense in the annual Bemidji State University football Green/White Spring Game at Chet Anderson Stadium Thursday that capped 2012 spring practice for the Beavers. The quarterbacking crew of senior Lance Rongstad (Eleva Wis.), junior Alex Hass (Milaca, Minn.) and sophomore Sam King (Grand Forks, N.D.) combined to go 20-for-29 for 282 yards and three touchdowns.


Bemidji State Green/White Game set for Thursday

The Bemidji State University football team will wrap-up its spring practices Thursday, April 19 as it hosts its annual Green/White Game at 7 p.m. The scrimmage will be held at Chet Anderson Stadium and is free and open to the public. Tailgating will begin at 5 p.m. in Diamond Point Park.


Tesch releases 2012 schedule

Bemidji State University head football coach Jeff Tesch today released the 2012 football schedule as the Beavers are on the field with spring practices underway. BSU has six home games on the schedule and will play both the new Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference members for 2012-13 in University of Sioux Falls and Minot State University.


Beaver football youth camp set for April 19

The Bemidji State University football team will host its annual Youth Football Camp Thursday, April 19 at Chet Anderson Stadium for all kids currently in grades K-6. Camp registration opens at 4 p.m. and the cost is $15 per participant.


Football Spring Ball Opens

The Bemidji State football team took to the practice field Friday afternoon to open spring ball. Rains plagued the Bemidji area Friday morning but the skies cleared up as the Beavers took the field at 3:30 with temperatures in the mid-50s. The March 23 start date is the earliest BSU has gotten on the field during spring practice during the Jeff Tesch era. The Beavers will have 14 practices leading up to the April 19 Spring Game at Chet Anderson Stadium at 7 p.m.

The Bemidji State University football team is set to begin spring practice Friday, March 23. The Beavers will practice 14 times before its annual spring game April 19 at 7 p.m.


Tesch announces the addition of 34 for the 2012 season

Bemidji State University head football coach Jeff Tesch today announced the addition of 34 student-athletes to the BSU roster for the 2012 season. Of the 34 commitments, 16 signed National Letters of Intent, two are transfers and 16 have inked offers of admission to attend Bemidji State.


Signing Day press conference set for Feb. 1 at 3:30 p.m.

February 1 officially marks the beginning of the 2012 season for the Bemidji State University football and women’s soccer programs as they announce their 2012 signing classes. Leonhardt named D2Football.com All-America Honorable Mention

Bemidji State University junior tight end Brian Leonhardt (Blaine, Minn.) earned his second all-america honor Thursday when he was named D2Football.com All-America Honorable Mention. Earlier this offseason, Leonhardt (second team) and senior safety Brody Scheff (first team) earned Daktronics, Inc. All-America honors. The award for Leonhardt is the 25th All-America laurel at Bemidji State on record.


Shaver named Don Hansen All-Region Third Team

Sophomore nose guard Matthew Shaver (St. Cloud, Minn.) has been announced Don Hansen All-Super Region Three Third Team by the Don Hansen Football Committee today. The award is the first of its kind for Shaver and marks the 15th member of the Bemidji State University football team to be honored by the publication since 2003.


Football doles out 2011 team awards

The Bemidji State University football team has announced its 2011 team awards, honoring the top players for the Beavers this season. The Offensive Player of the Year award went to junior quarterback Lance Rongstad (Eleva, Wis.), the Defensive Player of the Year was senior safety Brody Scheff (Waconia, Minn.), recipient of the Special Teams Player of the Year and Guy Vena Most Inspirational award was senior safety Jake Schmidt (Frederic, Wis.).

Beavers use strong second half to down UMC 31-12

Despite struggling in the first half, the Bemidji State University football team scored 24 second half points to end the regular season with a 31-12 victory at University of Minnesota, Crookston Saturday at Ed Widseth Field. With the win the Beavers post an 8-3 overall record to record their eighth eight-win season in program history and the sixth under head coach Jeff Tesch.

Senior Send-off: There’s safety in being home for Sluzewicz

An injury is typically a set-back for most athletes, but for senior safety Dusty Sluzewicz it was an eye-opening experience. Seven games into his junior season the Homer Glen, Ill. native suffered a knee injury that forced him to miss his first start as a collegiate athlete after starting the previous 29 games.

The Bemidji State University offense was stifled for the second consecutive week and Northern State University forced four turnovers Saturday as the Wolves downed the Beavers 14-0 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contest in Aberdeen, S.D. The Beavers are now 6-3 overall and 5-3 in NSIC play, while the Wolves improve to 3-6 overall and 2-6 in the NSIC.

Beavers rank No. 10 in NCAA Super Region #3 Rankings

The Bemidji State University football team was placed No. 10 in the first edition of the NCAA Super Region Three Rankings today. Ten teams from each of the four super regions were announced by the NCAA Division II Football Committee. Quarterback turned cornerback finds success

When Larry Miller first came to Bemidji State three years ago he was wearing a red jersey in practice, taking snaps as a quarterback. Now he is a starting cornerback for the Beaver ‘Gang Green’ defense, trying to stop the opposing quarterback, a position he had played through high school. The switch hasn’t been easy for Miller, but his transformation to the BSU secondary has been quick, earning the sophomore from Dallas, Texas a spot in the starting 11.


No. 20 Beavers travel to U-Mary for NSIC North Battle

Scheff named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week

Bemidji State University senior safety Brody Scheff (Waconia, Minn.) was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday for his performance in the 20-7 victory against Concordia University, St. Paul Saturday. The award is the first of his career and marks the first time a BSU defensive player has earned the award since 2007.

It took seven games before Jeff Tesch recorded his first win as a collegiate head coach Oct. 19, 1996 and after two seasons he could count his total wins on one hand - four. Since then, Tesch and the Beavers have posted a wining record in 12 of the last 13 seasons and Sept. 10, 2011, celebrated the head coach’s 100th career victory at BSU.

The age of dual sport athletes at the professional level is dead and even in the NCAA is becoming a rarity. That is what makes junior Lance Rongstad so special. Not just because he plays two sports in college, but what he brings to the table as a starting quarterback and starting guard/forward. Oh yeah, and that ‘student’ part in student-athlete? Head coach Jeff Tesch earned his 100th career victory at Bemidji State University Saturday as the Beavers knocked-off No. 16 Augustana College 30-27 in overtime at Kirkeby-Over Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D. Thirty-seven points were scored between the two teams in the fourth quarter and overtime as the squads traded blows all the way to the end when Lance Rongstad found a wide open Brent Kondziolka for a five-yard score in OT.

The Bemidji State University football team was slated eighth (95 points) in the 2011 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Preseason Coaches’ Poll announced today by league officials. The Beaver football team hit the field today for their first round of two-a-day practices. The student-athletes got a break from the normal August heat as temperatures stayed in the high 60s-low 70s, the sun peaked in and out of the clouds and winds were steady.

(HHH Metrodome) - It was a tale of two halves for the Bemidji State football program in its season finale at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Merchants Bank Metrodome Classic. PAUL, Minn. - Three Bemidji State football players were named First-Team All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, headlining a school-record group of nine players named to the All-NSIC team as announced today by the league office.
