Thompson and Scheff garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University athletes Bethany Thompson (Jr., OH, Owatonna, Minn.) and Brody Scheff (Sr., S, Waconia, Minn.) have been named as the inaugural Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week for the 2011-12 athletic season after recording outstanding athletic performances to open their respective seasons.

Thompson led the Bemidji State volleyball team to a 3-1 mark to open the season at the Active Ankle Invitational in Sioux Falls, S.D. Sept. 2-3. Thompson had 52 kills (3.25 kills/game) in the four matches and hit .304, while she added 36 digs (2.25 digs/game). The junior recorded the first double-double of her career with 13 kills and 13 digs in a 3-0 loss to University of Sioux Falls. Thompson also set new career highs in kills (17) in a 3-2 victory versus Minot State University and digs (13) versus Sioux Falls.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection is the first of Thompson’s career and marks the first occasion a member of the BSU volleyball team has been recognized during the 2011-12 campaign.

Scheff posted a career-high two interceptions, as the Bemidji State defense picked the Minot State quarterback five times and blanked MSU 27-0 in the ‘Beaver Bash’ Aug. 25. His two interceptions went for a career-best 40 yards. His first interception was returned 32 yards and set-up a rushing touchdown by junior quarterback Lance Rongstad (Eleva, Wis.) to hand BSU a 17-0 lead. He returned his second pick eight yards. He also added five tackles (one solo) and one pass break-up.

Scheff’s award marks the first for a member of the BSU football team and marks the first Beaver Pride’s weekly honor of his career.

The BSU volleyball team, now 3-1 on the season, head to Duluth, Minn. this weekend for a quartet of matches in the University of Minnesota Duluth Tournament.  The Beavers are set to battle 2010 NCAA Tournament participants Rollins College and California University (Pa.), as well as facing Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foes Upper Iowa University and Winona State University in non-conference competition.

The Bemidji State football team will also be in action this weekend as it travels to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on No. 16 Augustana College in the teams’ NSIC opener. The opening kick off is set for 1 p.m.
