Bemidji State football begins training camp Aug. 10

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The sounds of helmets clashing, whistles blowing and coaches barking instruction is near. The Bemidji State University football team is set to return to campus Aug. 10 to begin a three week training camp and prepare for the 2012 season.

Nearly 110 student-athletes are scheduled to report to BSU Aug. 10 to conduct paper work, move in to on and off-campus housing and check out equipment for the upcoming campaign that opens at Chet Anderson Stadium against Upper Iowa University Aug. 31 at 6 p.m.

Aug. 11 the team has scheduled testing and in the afternoon will hit the field for its first practice of the year. The Beavers will practice every day before breaking camp Aug. 25. BSU will conduct five two-a-day practices before school begins Aug. 27 and the normal afternoon meeting and practice schedule is put in place.

The Beavers return 16 starters from a 2011 team that ranked in the national poll on three different occasions and finished 8-3 overall and 7-3 in the NSIC to finish in a three-way tie for fourth in the league standings. BSU will look to build on its sixth eight-win season under head coach Jeff Tesch - who enters his 17th season at Bemidji State on a new six-year contract extension - with seven 2011 All-NSIC performers back in the line-up.

The Beaver offense finished the 2011 season averaging 26.8 points per game and welcomes eight starters, including 2011 All-American and 2012 preseason All-American tight end Brian Leonhardt (Sr., Blaine, Minn.). The ‘Gang Green’ defense returns seven starters from a year ago. Anchored by preseason All-American nose guard Matthew Shaver (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.), the BSU defense was one of the best in the conference in 2011 allowing just 16.0 points per contest to rank No. 3 in the nation.

The 2012 captains are senior quarterback Lance Rongstad (Eleva, Wis.) and Leonhardt on the offensive side of the ball and the defensive captains are senior linebacker Cory Crosby (Cold Spring, Minn.) and junior linebacker Buckley Wright (Sioux City, Iowa).

Bemidji State University, located in Bemidji, Minn., is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
