BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Sonja Barr (GK, So., Duluth, Minn.) and Lance Rongstad (QB, Sr., Eleva, Wis.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Sept. 22-28.
Barr led the Bemidji State soccer team to a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) victories on the road last weekend. The sophomore finished the two-game set with a 2-0-0 record, while collecting a shutout and a 0.67 GAA in 135 minutes of action. She recorded one save and allowed a goal in 45 minutes of relief in a 2-1 victory at University of Sioux Falls Saturday before turning aside eight Southwest Minnesota State University shots Sunday en route to a 1-0 victory and her third shutout of the season. Her efforts helped propel the Beavers to their first victory in Marshall, Minn. and extend the team's winning streak to four games. She is now 5-0-1 on the season with a 1.04 GAA and a .846 save percentage with 44 saves.
Barr’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the second of her collegiate career, while it is the third for a member of the BSU soccer team in 2012. She follows Jessie Voeller (F, Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) who was selected for the award Sept. 5 and last week’s (Sept. 26) recipient Mary O’Brien (F, So., Maplewood, Minn.). Barr was previously recognized as Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week Sept. 28, 2011.
Rongstad threw for 159 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 53 yards and a score in the BSU football team’s 35-2 homecoming victory against University of Minnesota, Crookston Saturday. Rongstad was 11-for-18 through the air and completed a season-long 66 yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Justin Lee (WR, Sr., Elgin, Ill.). On the ground he added 53 yards, including a BSU season-long rush of 34 yards to the end zone.
This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the second of the season for Rongstad, while it stands as the seventh time the Eleva, Wis. native has been recognized by the organization. He was previously honored for excellence on the football field Sept. 5 of this season and Sept. 14, Oct. 12 and Nov. 16 of the 2011 campaign, while the multi-sport athlete earned athlete of the week accolades for his performance on the basketball court Feb. 2, 2011 and Feb. 24, 2010.
The BSU football team (2-3; 1-2 NSIC) takes to the road Saturday for a battle at University of Mary beginning at 2:30 p.m. Last season, BSU fell to the Marauders 49-21 in Bismarck, N.D.
The Bemidji State soccer team, now 7-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in NSIC play, continues league play this weekend when it opens a four-game homestand hosting Minnesota State University Moorhead Saturday and Northern State University Sunday. Both games will take place at the BSU Soccer Complex and are slated to get underway at 1 p.m.
