Beaver Pride names Yost and Walker Athletes of the Week

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Jessica Yost (OH, Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) and Avery Walker (Sr., RB, Milwaukee, Wis.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week, after recording outstanding athletic performances between Sept. 30-Oct. 6.

Yost led the Beaver volleyball team in kills in both their home matches Oct. 4-5. In a 3-2 loss to Minnesota State University, Mankato, she totaled a season-high 23 kills and posted a .404 hitting percentage. She also chipped in 13 digs. Yost recorded 10 kills in Saturday’s 3-0 loss to No. 1 Concordia University, St. Paul.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the second of Yost’s young career and the second for the BSU volleyball team, as Yost was selected for the weekly honor Sept. 18.

Walker rushed 46 times for a career-high 265 yards and two touchdowns at University of Minnesota Crookston Saturday. The mark established back-to-back 150-plus yard games for the senior. His long rush went for 40 yards, while he averaged 5.8 yards per carry.

He became the first BSU back to go for 200 or more yards in a game since Dustin Kroeplin rushed for 200 yards versus Northern State Oct. 30, 2010, while the mark ranks fourth on BSU’s single-game rushing list.

The 46 carries is the most by an NCAA Division II running back this season, while the 265 yards is the fifth most yards in 2013.

Walker is third in the NSIC in rushing, averaging 121.4 yards per game.

The Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the second consecutive honor for Walker and fourth overall for the BSU football team in 2013-14. Walker earned the nod Oct. 2, sophomore linebacker Connor Quinn (Geneva, Ill.) was honored Sept. 11, while junior safety Scott Christensen (Stockbridge, Ga.) earned the award Sept. 18.

The Beavers host University of Mary (3-2; 3-2 NSIC, 1-0 NSIC North) Oct. 12 at Chet Anderson Stadium. The NSIC contest is set to begin at 1 p.m. and serves as the annual Lion’s Vision Awareness Game.

Bemidji State volleyball (5-10 overall, 1-6 NSIC) returns to action Oct. 11-12 on the road to take on Northern State University Friday at 7 p.m. and Minnesota State University, Moorhead Saturday at 4 p.m.
