LIBERTY, Mo. -- Bemidji State University true freshman Gunner Olszewski’s record-tying day against Minot State University earned the defensive back his second Defensive Player of the Week honor Wednesday, this time on a national level from D2Football.com. Olszewski was selected for the award after earning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday.
Olszewski garnered national recognition after tying a program single-game record of three interceptions in a 32-7 against Minot State to help Bemidji State continue a six-game win streak, the longest in program history since 1941. The total is a career-high, as he entered the game with three interceptions on the season. Olszewski also led the team in tackles on the day with eight, four solo and four assisted, including one tackle for a loss of six yards.
The three interceptions set a single-game high in the NSIC while Olszewski now ranks second in the conference and ninth in the country in total interceptions this season. He is on the cusp of reaching the Beavers single-season record for interceptions of eight, set by Rich Schwartz in 1984. Olszewski leads the team and ranks 12th in the NSIC in tackles with 71, 43 solo and 28 assisted.
This week’s D2Football.com National Offensive Player of the Week is Blake Barney (QB) from Dixie State and D2Football.com National Special Teams Player of the Week are Sheldon Mayer (PR) from Shippensburg and Deonte Harris (PR) from Assumption.
Olszewski is the first Beavers student-athlete to earn a national player of the week award since D2Football.com named safety Brody Scheff the defensive player of the week. Scheff also recorded three interceptions while earning the award Dec. 11, 2011.
