BSU Football picked fifth in preseason poll, Hein selected to top honor

BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- In the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches Poll that was released today, the Bemidji State University football team was selected to finish fifth overall and second in the NSIC North Division. Junior quarterback Jordan Hein took the division’s top offensive preseason honor while being voted the NSIC North Division Offensive Player of the Year.

The Beavers tallied 153 points in the overall poll and 42 in the North Division poll after finishing 2015 with a share of the division title. BSU went 7-4 last season, taking seven of its final eight games of the year and tying a program record with six consecutive victories between Sept. 26-Oct. 31.

Hein, a native of Perham, Minn., returns to lead the program at quarterback after landing on the 2015 All-NSIC First Team. He ranked among the top 10 in seven BSU all-time single-season categories after taking over the full-time starter spot in week one. Hein took care of the ball while throwing and finished with the fewest interceptions among all NSIC starting quarterbacks. He ranked fifth in the conference in touchdown passes with 22, and sixth in total offense (270.6 ypg) and passing yards (218.8 ypg). The junior threw for 250+ yards in five games and converted a career-high five passing touchdowns Oct. 17 at Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Bemidji State returns all 11 starters on offense and eight on defense, including nine All-NSIC members in total. The “Gang Green” return to the field for their season opener Thursday, Sept. 1 against Upper Iowa University at Chet Anderson Stadium.
