Hein snags first career NSIC Offensive Player of the Week honor

BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- Junior quarterback Jordan Hein was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Week after leading Bemidji State University football to a 45-17 upset of Minnesota State University, Mankato Saturday, Sept. 10. Hein threw for 300+ yards for the second time in his career to push the Beavers to their first 2-0 start since 2011.

The Perham, Minn., native finished with 388 total yards and three touchdowns during the road win. Hein threw for 306 yards and one touchdown while adding 82 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He finished with a 69.4 completion percentage, 12.2 average yards per completion and no interceptions. Hein’s performance put him in a tie for fifth in career touchdown passes and moved him into sixth in total touchdowns responsible for on BSU’s career lists.

The Beavers scored on their first three drives of the night against the Mavericks before heading to halftime with a 24-0 lead. BSU followed up to outscore MSU 21-17 in the second half. The offense outgained Minnesota State 563-352 in total yards, 306-173 in passing yards and 257-179 in rushing yards.

Sophomore defensive back Gunner Olszewski earned NSIC Defensive Player of the Week following the season opener versus Upper Iowa University. Olszewski recorded 17 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery in the home-opening win.

Hein and Bemidji State brings their No. 24 ranking back to Chet Anderson Stadium for a matchup against Wayne State College. The Beavers’ annual Shrine Game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 in the 19th meeting in the series.
