Tompkins named 2017 Academic All-America® Division II First Team

AUSTIN, Texas -- Bemidji State University football senior safety Evan Tompkins became the third Beaver Football student-athlete ever to be selected to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® Division II First Team as the full list was released Tuesday.

A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., and a pre-law major at Bemidji State, Tompkins helped lead the BSU program to an 8-3 record in 2017, the third straight season with at least seven wins. He finished his senior campaign with 41 total tackles, 21 solo and 20 assisted, while starting all 11 games. Tompkins recorded three interceptions, returning them for 40 yards, and recovered one fumble. He was also a member of the Fall Academic All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Team over the past three seasons.

Tompkins was a part of the “Gang Green” defense that ranked third in the NSIC with 20 interceptions, fourth with 17.3 points allowed per game and fifth with 299.3 yards allowed per game. He recorded career highs with eight tackles to open the season Aug. 31 at Winona State University and two interceptions the next week Sep. 9 against Concordia University-St. Paul.

Tompkins was one of 26 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II First Team members that held a composite 3.89 GPA. He currently holds a 3.84 GPA through his senior year at BSU.

Bemidji State has now totaled six members on the CoSIDA Academic All-America® list, including three on the first team. Tompkins follows in the footsteps of former tight end Brian Leonhardt (2012) and former running back Gena Adams (2016) as the only Beavers to qualify for first team honors.
