Beaver Football receives votes in AFCA Top 25 Poll

WACO, Texas -- The Bemidji State University football program received votes in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Poll released Monday. BSU (5-1, 3-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division) completed a 25-21 comeback victory over University of Sioux Falls to earn its first votes in the AFCA Top 25 Poll since Sept. 11, 2017.

The Beavers faced an uphill battle against the Cougars after trailing 14-3 at halftime and 21-3 with 8:30 remaining in the third quarter. BSU went on to outscore USF over the final quarter and a half, 22-0, behind two rushing touchdowns from senior running back Andrew Lackowski and a 40-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Jared Henning to senior wide receiver Jameson White. Lackowski ended the day with a team-high 126 rushing yards, while Henning added 166 yards passing.

Senior defensive back John Vogeler and sophomore linebacker Jaylen Jenkins each recorded an interception in the second half. The defense as a whole totaled at least 10 tackles for a loss for the second straight game, including three quarterback sacks. Sophomore linebacker Gabe Ames led the defense with nine tackles, while senior defensive lineman Dylan Ellingson and junior linebacker Grant Bushinski each led the team with 2.0 tackles for a loss.

Bemidji State prepares for its final road game against NSIC South opponents, traveling to Fayette, Iowa Saturday, Oct. 13 to face Upper Iowa University at 2 p.m. BSU leads the nation in red zone defense, allowing scores on 45.5 percent of opponent trips. The team’s red zone offense also ranks among the tops in the nation, coming in third with a conversion rate of 96.2 percent on scoring opportunities in the red zone.
