FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The National Football League’s New England Patriots have announced that they have signed former Bemidji State University football player Gunner Olszewski as a rookie free agent.

According to, the Alvin, Texas native and former Beaver defensive back and special teams standout is participating in the team’s organize team activities (OTA) as a wide receiver and has also see time as a punt returner during the early stages of the practice sessions. Olszewski participated in the team's rookie minicamp, May 10-11.

Olszewski, the 2018 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-NSIC North Division on both defense and special teams, was named American Football Coaches Association All-America First Team, Don Hansen All-America Second Team and All-America Second Team at the conclusion of his senior season. He finished third on the team with 63 tackles, including 36 solo tackles, and ranked third with three interceptions in nine games played. Olszewski totaled four pass breakups and 1.5 tackles for a loss of seven yards.

He left Bemidji State as one of the football program’s all-time greats. In four years, he was selected to the all-conference team six times and bookended his collegiate career by earning the NSIC’s Newcomer of the Year award as a freshman and its Defensive Player of the year award in his final season.

Olszewski finished his career second all-time at BSU with 13 interceptions and 923 punt return yards and holds the program record with 183 solo tackles.

He was also a catcher and outfielder for the BSU baseball team from 2016-18. He was named 2017 All-NSIC First Team and earned Second Team honors as a freshman.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
