OTTAWA, Ontario. – The Canadian Football League’s Ottawa Redblacks announced that they have signed former Bemidji State University football player John Voegler for the upcoming season.

The two-time All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference defensive back, who is listed as a linebacker, was added to Ottawa’s active roster Saturday and is participating in the team’s training camp.

The Redblacks open preseason play Saturday when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at 6 p.m. in Ottawa. The team officially gets the regular season underway June 15 with a road trip to Calgary, Alberta to face the Stampeders in an encore performance of the 2018 Grey Cup.

The Redblacks went 13-8 in 2018 to clinch the CFL’s East Division and in 2018 made their second Grey Cup appearance in three seasons, wining the title in 2016.

Voegler played in 11 games for the Beavers as a senior recording 44 total tackles, which included 29 solo stops. The Second-Team All-NSIC selection intercepted four passes for 58 yards and one touchdown. In addition, he totaled three pass breakups and set a career high in kick return yardage (84) averaging 21 yards per return.

Voegler finished career as BSU's all-time leader with four interceptions returned for touchdowns.
